I think if you are not potty-trained by the time she goes to pre-school (3+ years old?) then that is socially considered late... because most schools require your child to be able to use the potty after 3. So I think you are in the good zone :)

I would say try to give her an hour of underwear time each day? And tell her that she should keep her underwear clean and dry because it is so pretty and she is a big girl now. Gradually increase the underwear time if she is able to remain clean and dry....etc. Things will happen VERY quickly (when they are ready), so even if you start training in January she may get it within 1-2 weeks. Seriously. Don't worry!

And very often I heard from parents of girls and they said they didn't do anything, they just train themselves, as in having long periods of dry time and asking to be in underwear / use the potty...etc. all you need to do is to show them.

Potty training is a lot like breastfeeding I think (haha). No matter what you pick (training early or training late), unless you are super successful at one go with no accidents (which is not possible), the parents will be guilty somehow. For me I am guilty that I pushed him when he was just 2.5 years old when he was clearly clueless and not ready. I felt like I traumatized him (and me) unnecessarily because I was afraid of what your husband described. So the truth is you are OK regardless of what you do! Hugs!!

Kids vary a lot in their potty training ability. As a rule, my ears don't perk up until a child isn't getting the hang of it at the age of three on.

Also you can search for my blog post on toilet learning. Maybe that's a style of training that suits your LO better?

I say to do it when all of you are ready. If you're ready, it will take a three days...if you're not, it will take a year and three days. I was a preschool director, and we definitely pushed potty training so kids could move up classrooms. It sucked.

@brownie: Amen.

@Mrs. D: You're golden. I am firmly convinced that we can't "train" them: we can just provide the means, and the opportunity (and some encouragement). Ellie was in underwear full-time at 24 months with only three accidents ever, and Lorelei will be three in March and the only "training" that has gone on with her is in guerrilla tactics. Clearly she knows how to pee where she wants because she has, on several occasions, revenge peed on Ellie's carpet. :meh: She has been cloth-diapered since birth, read a slew of toilet and toilet-related books, joined every single person in our family in the bathroom at one point or another to see proof that people can use the toilet as something other than a step-stool or launch-pad... no dice. But she will get there. Someday. Hopefully your daughter will be ready soon. If she's excited about the prospect of preschool, it might be some added fun motivation! We have a feeling Lorelei might miss out on at least the first session of preschool because they require underwear, but we have a while to worry about that since Lorelei would be 3.5.

Our preschool wants them potty trained before they start at 2.5...but we keep thinking LO is trained (at 2.5) then she has an accident while we're out, like every 2 weeks (and she's not nap/night trained).

I definitely don't think 2.5 is late! I think most of the 2's and 3's are meant for potty training!

Thank you everyone, that backs up what I've been saying! I may have hoped to have her trained LONG before now, but I don't want to push her yet. She needs to be trained to start preschool, which if there's room she could start at her birthday, but not officially until September.

Our ped and all our friends ESP with boys have said don't even bother until close to 3. Our daycare has to have them PT by 3 to move up classrooms.

Potty training is late when the kid goes to college. Seriously there is no right or wrong answer to this question. I think most kids potty train to go to school so sometime between 2 and 5 depending on preschool/kindergarten. We still struggle with potty training at 3.5 years old and he has been pee trained since 2.

Our pediatrician said boys train closer to 3. Our son is interested and goes on the potty but is perfectly content to pee and poop in his diaper. And I'm 37 weeks pregnant so not feeling much pressure to push him.

Our LO is 2.5 too (3 in june) and not potty trained. We talk about it and she tells me that she/we "poop in the potty" etc but I don't really think she's ready to go for it 100% yet.

I don't know what's normal, but most of the parents I know IRL didn't potty-train until 3 or even 4. 2.5 is definitely not "late".

Our daughter is 2.5, and although she shows interest in the potty and is in pull-ups exclusively now, she's not consistent in being willing to use the potty or in telling us she needs to pee, and we're not consistent in asking her if she needs to use it either.
My husband is convinced that she's behind in her training and that we are bad parents for not pushing her sooner, but he's not basing this thought on any other kids we know!

So, is she behind, or still in the average range? She'll be 3 in February.
