It's January 1st.</p> <p>Growing up, it was nice to not have to go to school on my birthday, but that meant no schoolmates saying "Happy Birthday" to me or having teachers recognize my birthday during the day like they did for students who had their birthday during the school day.</p> <p>In college, it meant not having class on my birthday, but it also meant being at home, away from my friends, and not being able to celebrate it with my friends.</p> <p>When I turned 21, my birthday was on a Sunday. My friends were all hung-over from New Year's Eve parties the night before, and all the bars in town were closed.</p> <p>And now that I'm 28, it still means never being able to celebrate my birthday ON my birthday because my friends are all always hung-over or tied from the night before.</p> <p>Maybe it'll get better once myself and my friends all have kids and don't party/stay up late for New Year's Eve anymore? Spring is usually in full-force, so everything is in bloom and beautiful. I grew up in the South, so it was almost always warm enough for the pool or a trip to the beach or lake. And some years it would full during Spring Break. </p> <p>The big downsides for me, which I'm reminded of via television and/or internet every year, are all the not-happy events that happened right around my birthday: The Titanic, Chenobyl, Waco, Oklahoma City, Columbine, VA Tech, and the BP Oil Spill.
