@StbHisMrs: oh man. I'm so sorry... I hate that. Child support in times when clearly the person doesn't need the money.

I hope things work out... ( i mean it has to - right?!) Great to hear the hubs got a job even if it's 4 months. That will definitely help the cash flow.

Oh we're in a similar boat here too, it isn't any fun. I have a full-time job but it really only covered our "fun money" dh brought in the most. He's been laid off since September and only worked "part-time" June-September because I was on bedrest and kept going to the hospital. His unemployment and health benefits ran out in February. He has 2 daughters from a previous marriage and his ex-wife threw the biggest temper tantrum I've ever seen a grown woman throw because we needed to put food on our table and keep the roof over our head rather than give her $800 a month on top of her 6 figure salary. I despise her. So we put some of our bills on hold and gave her the child support.
Luckily my Dad has a great job where he only works for 3 months a year in Alaska and they had an opening for a crane operator. He took my husband up with him and he's getting training, he'll be up there until the end of August though, so 4 months away total.
It has to get better for everybody sooner or later...

@Modern Daisy: i'm so sorry... it really sucks. I know cutting out television, internet and my cell phone would be a good 200$ more a month, but I can't live without internet (i'm a graphic designer so I need it to contact clients etc)

so i've been couponing like a mad women, but I will go back to the envelop system, where you take out money for what you budgeted that way you are sure not to over spend. Paying with debit or Credit is easy... but if you only have 100$ for the groceries, trust me you make sure not to go over (otherwise you look like a retard at the cash)

@blushink: I totally feel for you. It was raining cats and dogs recently in our household too. We bought an apartment in Dec based on our after tax paychecks, spent almost half of our savings on closing costs, moving, etc. then when we did our taxes in April we realized we weren't witholding enough so not only did our monthly take home decrease by $400, we also owed the IRS $7K. Thank goodness we had the money, otherwise I don't know what we would have done. Before we found this out, we had also taken out a 401K loan for my surgery AND elected to take a loan from my employer on Jan 1st when I switched pay periods (going from 24 to 26 paychecks a year) so it's basically one 'bonus' paycheck I got on the 1st that I have to slowly pay back the rest of the year. It made sense at the time since the alternative would have been to go almost 4 weeks between paychecks, but now it's really hurting to make those payments.

So all these decisions based on a take home that was totally incorrect - we were already tightening our belts for the 401K loan and employer loan. There is a little bit of light at the end of the tunnel since the loans will be all paid off in 6 months, but in the meanwhile we've gotten rid of almost every other monthly expense besides mortgage and maintenance.

@Rachel: Canada's healthcare is free but Quebec government years ago screwed up and theres a lack of doctors. So waiting is the norm. Sucks but it's better than paying 12k for the surgery.

So sorry :( I hope that once your new disability goes through they'll just deduct it - easier than forking out $4k.

Is that common, to have to wait 3-6 months for surgery? I think we are all usually jealous of Canada's wonderful policies when it comes to mat leave and universal healthcare, but seems like you pay for it in other ways :(

We are feeling a pinch, too. My husband's union has been on strike for over two months now, so we have no income from him. Thank God I have my own insurance through my job or we would be looking at an uninsured birth for the new baby since insurance is suspended during the strike. I can cover our bills with my income, but we haven't had any expendable income which is kind of a bummer at the end of pregnancy. I haven't had a hair cut in over a year and I was REALLY hoping to get one before baby came.

@blushink: The thing that always gets me the most upset is that I feel like we have already paired down our finances down to the bare minimum, save for like 1 or 2 "luxuries" (like my smart phone which I held off on getting for years until a few months ago). We have no internet at home, no cable, no other extraneous monthly bills. But it just feels like the more we bare down, it still is never enough, and we always need to be doing more to spend less and save more. So frustrating!

@Mrs. Jacks: there's a law in Quebec that if the company you work for offers private insurance you must take it and can't opt for the public insurance (that still Costs about 650$ a year)

In my case its a family package. So my husband and kids are on there. oh well it's not only health insurance. It's actually life insurance, disability insurance and additional perks. Paid massages, side road assistance. Etc.

@winniebee: actually having our kids makes things better. Well apart for spending crazy amounts on diapers. ( but I don't think we are a cloth diaper type of family)

Luckily daycare isn't pricey and we get money back from the government. (can't wait for it to readjust now that we have Sienna) and also the hubs car payments are taken car of until August.

@Boogs: fingers crossed. Because this mama doesn't have the money to pay the bank back. Luckily in a way, we filed for disability again in April. So worst case scenario they will simply deduct the amount we owe them from there. Even if we badly need that money.

@highwire: I completely agree its about changing habits an doing a 360. We actually changed Internet / phone / tv company and that alone saves us 35$ a month. Is it necessary? No but both being home and not working is the only thing that keeps us sane. We don't go out so we watch movies and television at home.

Just chiming in to tell you DH and I just finished a conversation about improving our finances. We are trying to use his income for bills and mime to pay down debt, but we don't make enough to do that and maintain our previous lifestyle. It's a hard pill to swallow and we have to just keep making adjustments and sacrifices along with keeping the lines of communication open. It is really challenging for us.

Aw, sorry to hear this. Money problems are stressful. As others said, try calling those you owe and explain your situation. Sometimes they'll cut you a break on deadlines for payment or breaking it down in small monthly payments that are more manageable....Good luck.

Oh my, that's really sucky. I hope things get better soon! Just so you know, as far as the backtaxes go, Revenue Canada will take very small payments, if you talk to them. My parents farm and one year they owed and Revenue Canada was offering to take $20 payments (or something). It might get them off your back for a bit, until things work themselves out.
