I've worked as either a teacher or school librarian for 11 years now and I've had my share of mean comments. One was from my first year teaching and I still remember it because I couldn't believe who it came from. I had an 8th grade student who was like, a star straight-A student. I taught the gifted program at that point, so I had him in one class and his 6th grade sister in another class and they were secretly my favorite, favorite kids.</p> <p>Both of their parents worked till at least 5 and they didn't like going home alone, so they'd come to my classroom almost every single day after school and hang out until I went home (usually around 4:30-5). I would give them candy, let them hang out...we would talk about all kinds of stuff and play geography games. I coached him for the Scripps Howard spelling bee--for free!--many, many hours a week *including* the three saturdays before the regional bee (I should specify..this was because his parents asked me too, because english was their second language).</p> <p>And then I guess some of his friends started teasing him about having a crush on me, since he was always in my room after school--and this embarrassed him. So he wrote this note to like, 5 friends (who were all my students), saying he didn't have a crush on me because I was WHORE. That was the exact word he used. He said plenty of other bad things, but that was the worst. This was a *very* religious muslim boy and both he and his sister were somewhat sheltered, so I'm not entirely sure he knew what it meant, just that it was bad.</p> <p>Well, his friends--being the little gifted goody-goodies they were--immediately turned it in. To me. And I had the pleasure (not) of showing my principal, calling his parents (cringe) and giving him 3 day of after school detention with the vice principal. Because nothing says fun like calling two devout muslim parents during Ramadan to tell them their son called his teacher a whore.</p> <p>What fun. Definitely try not to take it to heart, since most teens don't really care about anything but themselves.</p> <p>The thing that hurt me recently was when my cousin's daughter told me that I needed to clean up my house before H started walking because it was really messy. She also told me she didn't like the food I cooked. I had worked really hard to get the house clean and clutter picked up for H's party, and it really bothered me at the time. Your own children or children you work with.<br /> Man, it sucks.<br /> In my career I have worked with all ages but right now I'm working with adolescents. And they can be brutal. Normally it doesn't faze me. I have been known to say that if you care what a 12 year old thinks of you then you have a problem. I guess I have a problem because, man, it kicked my ass today. It's the age old grown-up complaint: I was trying to do something fun and nice for them (spent my own money) and they acted like total buttheads. One ended up w/ detention. Needless to say I was disheartened but I wasn't really hurt, I didn't take it personally.<br /> So, at lunch I go out to my car and 5 or so students are huddled about and scatter when I approach and, lo and behold, my car is all keyed up. And while I know that angry would be a good response, mostly my feelings are hurt. What a bummer.</p> <p>I know that kids just don't see/understand when we are trying hard and many honestly don't think we have feelings, and normally I can keep it in perspective. But not today.</p> <p>So far my LO hasn't said anything that really hurts me, but I am pretty sure the day will come.</p> <p>Has anyone else been hurt by the under 18 crowd? </p>
