We registered for the 4oz Dr. Brown's glass bottles (heard good things from a mom-friend about Dr. Browns). I've also heard that if you plan on breastfeeding you won't need more than 4oz bottles each feeding.

We also registered for the Kiinde Twist system because it supposedly is an "all-in-one" type system and I plan on pumping when I go back to work. Apparently you pump directly into the bags then feed from the same bags. http://www.amazon.com/Kiinde-TS-N-001-NA-Twist-Breastfeeding-Starter/dp/B00CXSPL24 You can also apparently use the same bags for storing purees (the bags themselves aren't reusable). It just seemed really easy. But they are new so I don't actually know anyone who has used them.

I registered for Dr. Brown's preemie nipples, which I received, and some bottles I can't remember, because I never got them. When LO was here, I tried the Ameda bottles which came with my pump with the Dr. Brown's preemie nipple, and it was fine. I did buy a lot more of them, and I use them for both pumping and feeding. I had read that the nipple was more important than the bottle for encouraging breastfeeding, and that the slowest flow was best. The Dr. Brown's preemie nipples were the slowest flow I heard of. Many bottles and nipples are standard size, and you can use any standard size nipple with any standard size bottle. The Medela pump should take any standard size bottle. I did not care about glass or plastic, so I use plastic. I don't use a warmer, just a cup with warm water (from the tap).

I formula fed, so we used a LOT of bottles.

I hated the Avent. I felt that that let in too much air and caused her to overeat and projectile vomit all the time. We tried Playtex VentAire, which I liked but don't feel like the held up well. The bottoms started to leak after a couple months.

Overall, Dr Browns were my favorite. My DD had colic and gas issues and there was a noticeable difference when we used them over other brands. I'd absolutely recommend them.

I'm thinking I might end up with the glass Dr. Browns or Avent so I'm going to try the plastic Avent sample bottle that I got and a 3-pack of plastic Dr. Browns. I figure glass is way more expensive so I'll figure out quickly which brand he likes better and then I'll get that in glass.

@pui: I bought the glass Dr Brown's and my daughter was fine with them when she was still a newborn but stopped taking them. Also my daycare doesn't allow glass. I now pump into the glass bottles (will fit Ameda and Medela pumps) because I like to limit plastic where feasible. The glass does tug down a little on the pumping bra but I am able to pump directly into them.

If glass is important to you, I think the main brands that make them are Dr. Brown's, Born Free, Avent, and Lifefactory. Our daycare is fine with glass, and I've heard of others that allow glass as long as it has a silicone sleeve. We use Avent (DD isn't picky about bottles, and they have few parts/are easy to clean) but the only sleeve available is from a third-party maker and has meh reviews. I did drop one the other day with no issues, though! It just bounced. Glass is quite a bit pricier than plastic so I regret not deciding on it sooner, since I didn't put it on my registry and had to buy the bottles myself later on.

@MUI831: We don't have a Buy Buy Baby anywhere near us unfortunately.

@psw27: Right?! So many options!!!

@mfa_lady: Yup, the one in Short Pump. Which is still like 30 minutes from us! The Chesterfield one is even further. So annoying.

Thank you all for chiming in! This has been very helpful! I'm going to register for one or two single bottles and decide once the baby is here! And I think I'll probably ax the bottle warmer. Using a cup of hot water seems like an easy solution!

@Cole: I agree. I've got a 3 pack of Avents to bring back because DD likes the Medela system and Calma nipple, so it was silly for us to register.

I'd either register for a few 3 or 4 packs and keep them sealed w/ the receipt, or just see if you like the reviews on the Medela bottles (you usually get 4 5oz bottles with your pump). Calma is their new breastfeeding nipple, and while it has a learning curve, it's been great for DD and she's back and forth boob to bottle no problem. I've also had no problem using the Medela bottles in our two different warmers.

We registered for Medela bottles for the pump and Dr. Brown's based on reading. I knew I was going to be primarily breast feeding him, but when I went back to work, he'd have to have bottles from my mom. I wanted something close to BF.

We tried several bottles before deciding on the Dr Browns (we tried Tommee Tippee, Dr. B's, just putting a nipple on the Medela, and the Medela Calma). LO loves them, and I don't mind the cleanup. We have a little storage box for the dishwasher that fits all the parts for 3 of the bottles.

I pump into the Medela bottles that go with my PISA, and I bring them to my mom's every day when I pick LO up. She makes up the bottles then. At the end of the week, I bag/freeze anything that's left.

In terms of the bottle warmer, we usually use a pot of water on the stove. My mom has a car warmer just in case she needs it (the munchkin one, I think).

My suggestion for registering for bottles is to pick the type you think you will like best and register for a set of those. Keep them in the package with the receipt taped to the box. Then register for one single bottle of that set and a single of 2 or 3 others. Start by introducing baby to the single of your favorite, give it a couple of tries. If baby likes it open the big box and return the singles, if not try your other singles each for a few days. Once you find one take back the big set and any unopened singles to exchange for a full set of your new favorite.

Either way you have to return some but at least you have options at home. Alternately if you don't mind paying for them yourselves just get one bottle, try that one and then order more via Amazon prime.

@littlebit subscribing to this! The feeding section is where I had a bit of a meltdown last week while registering - holy overwhelming.

Also, a follow up question is - if you got your pump through insurance, did that sway your bottle choice? Since I am not able to get my pump until 30 days before delivery, I don't even know which one I will end up with. I think they have Medela and Avent but I'm not sure...

I wasn't concerned about glass v. plastic so we went with plastic. We registered for the newborn starter kit Tommee Tippee bottles (TT has gotten a lot of good reviews on here and elsewhere so that's why we went with those). The kit came with a few small bottles and a few big bottles and a bottle brush. Just a warning about Dr. Browns--not sure if the glass are the same but we tried the plastic ones while LO was on a bottle strike and cleaning them was a b*tch because of all the parts. I was actually glad when she rejected them!

ETA: TT makes bottle adapters that allow you to pump directly into the bottles from the pump :)

My bit of advice is that if you are close to a Buy Buy Baby, register there. One of the main reasons I liked them is their return policy. When I registered, the person who was signing me up told me that they know that it might take awhile to find the bottle that is right for your baby so if you buy 10 kinds of bottles and only one works, they'll let you return the other 9. They just want you to keep the packaging. I used this process to find the right sippy/straw cup.

I don't believe that you need to get a million bottles, in some parts of the world there aren't a lot of options, so you just have to deal with what's available.

Having said that, we used the Avent system. I liked them because you had the option to switch out nipples for soft or hard spouts and you could also add a handle to them so they can be held easier by the baby later on.

Also good to note is that if your baby has a latex or silicone sensitivity, the Playtex Drop In line carries both, so you can choose one or the other. I used these almost exculsively when we travelled.

We had a generic warmer, the simpler the better on that one!

I registered for the Medela since that's what my pump is and it came with bottles. So if T didn't like them I could at least have extra bottles for pumping and storage. I knew we wouldn't know what bottles would work until T tried them but I didn't want to register for every bottle under the sun and be stuck with ones I couldn't use. I got a few extra sets of Medela from friends and I figured we'd try them out and if T didn't like them we'd slowly buy others to try. Luckily he's not picky! So we use Medela.

I'm glad I'm able to pump straight into the bottles. I think that's important. Less washing and like someone already said, you lose a little bit each time you transfer.

We had to get slow flow nipples. Medium flow is the standard that comes with the bottles. More would run out of his mouth than he would eat with the medium flow.

I didn't get a bottle warmer. I rarely feed T a bottle at home and it's just as quick to run the bottle under warm water. LO isn't picky. He just needs the bottle to be not really cold so I don't have to actually worry about getting the milk warm...just take the chill off.

I saw an ad for Latch bottles in the BRU advertising. They sounded pretty cool, so I registered for those.

I would register for a few different types. We used plastic because daycare does not take glass. We ended up going with playtex wide mouth bottles.

@Littlebit: if you're not sure if you'll be BFing or formula feeding, i'd suggest maybe waiting on bottles. or register for them and don't open the box, so you can return if you change your mind! I made the mistake of washing everything and throwing out the box! if you end up formula feeding, you may want different size bottles, and you may not care about the same things as you would with a BF baby (similar to breast, slow flow).

I walked up and down the aisle for probably 40 minutes looking at all the options. It is SO overwhelming. In the end, I chose Tommee Tippee. I had planned/hoped to EBF, and I wanted to avoid nipple confusion. I thought the TT bottles looked like a boob, so that made the most sense to me. Luckily, D loved them, although we did end up having to go back and buy the anti-colic ones.

Even though we had to go back and buy more bottles since D ended up needing the anti-colic, I would still buy the regular ones first. Cleaning the anti-colic bottles is a PITA because of all the parts. Several times since we've no longer needed the anti-colic I've serioiusly considered going back and buying more of the regular ones. I would also say to go ahead and just buy/register for the bigger size bottles.

I registered for and got a bottle warmer, but sold it. It is totally unnecessary. We heat up a mug of water and drop the bottle in there. It actually takes less time to heat up that way. I would nix that.

ETA: Re: @septca's comment about pumping and regular-sized necks. The TT bottles are wide-neck bottles, so they did not fit a standard pump, but they sell adapters that make them fit. So I was still able to pump directly into my bottles. I'm not sure if others make the same adapters, though, so it's a good point to consider, for sure!
