For my kids, if they didn't fall asleep until like 30 minutes before a nap was supposed to be over, I'd let them sleep 30 minutes later and just feed them a little later so that they would at least get 1 hour of sleep. Then I'd just try to put them down a little earlier for the next nap.

If they just didn't sleep at all, I would feed them but still break the association between feeding and sleep. I would nurse in a bright sunny room, if they fell asleep I'd go change their diaper so they were at least roused up, and then I would swaddle them and do the same sleep routine and put them back down to sleep. While nap training, I try to just go with an eat, play, sleep routine as opposed to a clock schedule and try to get them to nap as long as possible.

@gingerbebe: I’m doing both naps and night. He’s doing well for nights. He cries for an hour than sleeps for 10-11 hrs.

Naps are alittle tricky cause i don’t want him to cry for more than hour and then have to wake up for his feedings. He just cried for this last nap for 1.5 hour so i went in feed him and he fell asleep nursing :(.... something i’m trying to break. He’s sleeping while being held for this nap. I didn’t want to repeat yesterday where he misses the naps because he’s crying.

I prefer to do both because he will just be confused. I understand the drive for night teaching is higher for sleep compared to napping.

Should I keep him up if he doesn’t nap after CIO or let him nurse to sleep and hold him? This is his second nap for the day(unfortunately alittle late because he was crying).

@cake2017: Nap training usually takes longer than night training. And honestly, both my kids always have to blow off steam before sleeping - DS1 more than DS2, but both of them still squawked and fake cried and yelled for a few minutes even after they were fully trained. DS1 is 39 months now and he pretty much yelled and screamed for 1-2 minutes after putting him down for naps until he was like 2 years old. They just roll over and pass out. So I wouldn't really stress if they cry.

I think consistency - whatever you're being consistent with - is important. For my family, we keep to a 30 minute give or take window on our schedule, so if we want our children to nap 2 hours, but they cry or wont fall asleep, I don't bail them until 90 minutes have elapsed. If they wake early, I let them hang out and if they are happily playing or singing in their rooms, I don't get them until the full nap time is over. If they wake early and start getting upset, I'll wait until its within 30 minutes of their desired nap time ending.

This obviously doesn't count illness or something like that. I just believe even if they don't sleep, they need to rest in a dark quiet room void of stimulation. Furthermore, I feel like that helps extend those naps and gets their bodies to get used to sleeping 2 hours at a time and then later when they switch to 1 nap, 2.5-3 hours. And yes, I remain consistent through regressions. Once the regression is over, they go right back to sleeping normally without skipping a beat and I have no bad habits to go back and fix.

I think its funny that they both sleep terribly at daycare. Part of it is because its in a communal room and its a little earlier than their preferred naptime, but also they can't like let the kids cry or fuss and they let the kids get up whenever they wake up. There's basically no expectation that they stay put and sleep - so they don't. At daycare, my 39 month old skips nap half the time and my 19 month old sleeps like 45 minutes to an hour, but at home, they sleep 2.5-3 hours for nap.

If you have to be on the go, I would really prioritize having the morning nap be at home. Its the one they are usually sleepiest for and the most restorative nap of the day.

@gingerbebe: Okay this make sense. I am trying to get him to nap for 2 hrs. I’m doing both naps and night and yesterday he slept an hour for each nap. (he was crying for approximately 30mins) Then a 2hr nap in the car seat during an errand. I will adjust going out per Sweetiepie’s suggestion.

Will he start to sleep longer for naps after training?

@SweetiePie: He cried for an hour both times for the naps. He fell asleep yesterday on his own during nap time after 30 minshe has been sleeping through the night for both days so far. I agree waking up from a nap at 330pm and going down at 7pm is too long so I will try to fit a catnap in there but didn’t want him to cry it out and not go and then wake up and be back down crying it out for sleep. I am doing both nap and sleep because I stopped nursing at night and I don’t want to confuse him.

Second night and he’s still sleeping:) I need to get the naps down so he has a better schedule.

Thanks again!

@gingerbebe: This schedule exactly.
That wake time 3:30-7:30/8 is way too long for that age in my opinion.
Ideal infant bedtime per sleep experts (Weissbluth for one) is between 5-7pm. Seems crazy early but they are so tiny and being a baby is exhausting.

Also, if you’re doing CIO and truly want to be fair to your baby and have the most success, you can’t go in after an hour and decide that’s too long. I mean, you can, it’s your baby. :-) But you cant expect it to work. All you’ll teach him is that if he cries for an hour mom will come in. So it just reinforces that he should cry for an hour. If you’re going to do it you have to do it the whole way and either do timed and consistent checks or just don’t go in no matter how long he cries. And I promise it won’t be hours every night, it becomes less and gets better. It’s only a couple of nights and then you’ll have a blissful 7p-7a sleeping baby.

Occasional car naps shouldn’t matter but don’t make it a habit. Plan errands for right after he wakes from a nap so you know he won’t be tempted to fall asleep in the car. Home sleep on a flat surface is the most restorative and restful sleep they can get.

At 6 months, both my boys either needed a 30 minute cat nap in the evening or had an earlier bedtime. On catnap days, they were up at 7-730am, napped from 930-1130am, then 130-330pm, and then a 20-30min cat nap from 530-6pm and then bedtime routine would start at 730pm. On 2 nap days, they would go down 10-12pm, then 230-430pm, then 7-730pm bedtime.

@MamaCate: He usually wakes up around 630-730am. However he was sleeping in the room with us so when we woke up he got up. He can definitely sleep longer.

His wake time is about 1.5-2hrs before the next. I usually have him down no more than 1.5 though. The 8pm bedtime works best for us because I will be returning to work and my husband doesn’t see him. However, I am going to play it by ear based on his morning wake times and the number of hrs he is getting within naps too.

Thanks for your feedback!

@cake2017: what is his typical awake period? Like how long does he stay awake before showing tired cues with earlier naps? I would use that as a rough guide—if he can go about 2-3 hours of being awake I would try to have him up by 4, thinking you are starting bedtime in the 6:30/7 range?

Also I am a big fan of early bedtime so I would try to keep it early instead of pushing back to 8. It is probably because both my kids have been early risers but also that early bedtime leaves a cushion for getting all.the.things done after they are asleep (dishes, lunches, morning prep, etc.). Hope that helps!

Hi everyone,
I have posted in the past that I am trying to figure out sleep training for LO who is almost 6months old. Well we moved and introduced him to his own room(he was in our room in a crib). He is no longer swaddled. I began with playing in his new room and playing in the crib.I nap trained for 2 days CIO (I really didn’t want to do this method) for up to an hour. He did not fall asleep. He cried for an hour both times. Last night, I started sleep training. He cried for 30 mins woke back up and cried for a minute. He cried for 15 mins during his naps today. He cried for an hour tonight. I put him down in his crib at 730pm last night and 7pm tonight. We have a strict bedtime routine.

He slept through the night last night(awake at 645am) and hoping same for tonight. However, I do not mind nursing at night. I set a time that I will not nurse before 1am.

When should I have his last nap be? Today he woke up at 330pm(I feel like he could’ve had one more nap but I wanted to get him down at 7/730pm). I do the routine of eat, play, sleep. Suggestions?

Depending on childcare etc I may have his bedtime back to 8pm. I wanted to get him down early because I wasn’t sure how long he would cry. Do you think this will be a problem? I know it depends on his wake up time. His Pediatrician stated 10-12 hrs is good for him plus naps.

He takes good naps (now after regression) so a I am confident he will have enough rest. Overall, he’s a happy baby and I go off his cues.

Any input would be great? Anything I need to look out for or avoid during this time? How do a i know he’s good with the “training”? I want to stay consistent and make sure he’s hitting naps in his crib as well plus night time. We did run out today and he had a nap in the car. Do you think this is a problem?

Sorry for all of the questions... FTM.
Thank you!
