I read this to my husband and he said, "I took (our daughter) into the men's room yesterday. I'll stop when she's big enough to go by herself." :) Our daughter is 3.5 but people always assume she's 4 or 5 because she's tall and speaks like an older child. It doesn't bother me when my husband takes her into the men's room; it's not like she's never seen a penis before (she does have a dad and a brother) and at this age she's old enough to understand about privacy and bathroom etiquette. In my opinion, it was a lot worse when she was around 2 and liked to (loudly) comment on other people's body parts than now because now she understands a little better about keeping her comments to herself.

I don't think it's a big deal. i think it's great that dad took the incentive so mom could eat or do whatever with their possible other children. I doubt he let her linger at the urinals :)

I *DO* like that most places have a family bathroom, now, though :)

I think I would have a parent accompany a child of the opposite sex until 8-10 if necessary! I honestly don't see the difference between an 8 year old boy in the ladies room and an 8 year old girl in the men's room, if with a parent.

whenever I feel comfortable sending them alone! i dont' see much difference between the mum or the dad taking a child, the stalls have doors either way!

Same age as little boys coming in to the women's restroom, so 6-7ish? Bit this is why I like family restrooms in malls and airports and large places and/or unisex bathrooms with no stall in smaller places like restaurants.

IMO, until the dad or daughter starts to feel uncomfortable about it. So whether that means 5, 7, or 9.

Yeah, my first reaction was 6. But I wouldn't send in a 6 yo on his own! So whenever I would send them in alone. And it's not always my job to bring my kid to the bathroom so DH would bring her til she's old enough to go in alone!

I think it's awesome that the dad would take her. It's not like she's on display for the world to see. There are closed stalls I would assume. One of my biggest pet peeves is the lack of changing stations in mens bathrooms. Why is it always the moms job?!

@brownie: agreed. I wouldn't want to send a 5 or 6 year old into the restroom alone either, especially if we were somewhere very crowded. I don't really think it's a big deal anyway, it's just a bathroom, whether it's for men or women. I guess with men's rooms a girl might see something if guys are at the urinals, but it's not like the men are walking around with it all hanging out, haha.

8 or 9 really. I would not let my 5 or 6 year old boy go into a large public restroom by himself. My friend is a single dad and that is his only option. 8 or 9 would be old enough to be responsible. Some kids may be ready earlier and others later.

I've thought about it the other way, boys with their moms in the ladies room. 5 or 6 strikes me as far too old.

I saw a post somewhere else that reminded me of this - we recently went out and DH saw a dad with his 4 or 5-year-old daughter in the men's bathroom. At first he thought maybe they were out without the mom, but later we saw the whole family sitting together.

Is this something I don't understand because I don't have a LO yet? Or is that something the mom should have handled at the girl's age?
