Ours came together fairly quickly and we were matched before we started our home study. I told my boss fairly soon but we have a good relationship.

Just a quick update...I mentioned something about needing my fingerprints done and my boss inquired. When I told him DH and I are working on our adoption application, he thought it was wonderful. Turns out, although they have since decided not to, he and his wife just went through the process of becoming foster parents.

It feels like since we started down this road, we have been receiving signs we are on the right path! :o)

This is a great topic. I decided not to tell until we were matched, since it was going to be a potentially long wait and I didn't want to get mommy tracked.

I think I will wait until our homestudy is complete to say anything. Raises and promotions are not a real concern because I am in the top position at work and have guaranteed raises through our union contract. My workplace is a family friendly place to be but is very small with only 5 employees. I know my boss will be supportive and we will come up with a game plan to enable the time off I need. Thanks for helping me think it through! :o)

I think it depends on your relationship with your manager. My boss is awesome and we've worked together for a long time so I would tell him right away. If you don't have a very secure relationship or you think it could change what projects they have you working on, maybe wait until you are a few months into the process before bringing it up.

I know NOTHING about adoption, except that it has a high uncertainty factor. I would wait until things are looking pretty certain, unless you have an amazing relationship with your boss. You never know if an opportunity for promotion, travel, etc. will come up and they'll say, "Nah, she's going to be taking time off soon/changing her priorities so let's go with someone else."

I have a great job and intend to stay there after our kiddo comes home. However, I also desire to take additional time off in those first few months. My boss is very generous and my job is flexible. With an uncertain timeline for placement, should I be upfront now and make him aware of my plans? How have you or would you handle this situation?
