@BandDmommy: we're heading into day six of croup with fever and dd's appetite has been sporadic. I'm mostly concerned with hydration, but honestly at 3 all I can do is keep offering over and over. I can't force her. Hope he's better soon! We're on vacation too, this sucks.

@BandDmommy: poor little guy! Hugs to you for having to deal with a sick kiddo while traveling - ours had what was misdiagnosed as an ear infection when we were in Hawaii (later turned out to be roseola!) and we were miserable that week!

@BandDmommy: as long as he's staying hydrated, I would keep offering and he'll eat when he's feeling better. My lo had the flu before Christmas and then got strep throat a few days later. He was miserable and when he did eat, he only wanted apple sauce or yogurt. Hope he gets better quick!!

@BandDmommy: oh bummer! Try not to worry about making the fever go away completely. It will help fight off the infections! I agree with all the pp that Gatorade really works better than most other liquids. Hope LO feels better quickly!

Does he have any other symptoms? sore throat? runny nose? cough?
Or just a fever?
B always gets sick on vacation and we usually take him to a walk in clinic. They are cheap and can usually get him some meds to help him feel better quickly!

I just talked to my pediatrician on Monday about a similar issue with my 16 month old son. She said that the typical rule of thumb for winter viruses is 5 days of vomiting and 10 days of atypical eating habits for toddler illness before they would seriously worry - she said anything inside that timeframe would be considered "normal." She said fluids are important and to let him eat what he wants/loves that's reasonable. I barely got my son to eat a few spoonfuls of baby food puree and some rice for a few days! He refused milk and yogurt, refused apple sauce, and even turned down water at one point so I was super worried.

Just in case it helps: After turning down water and spitting out apple juice and coconut water, we tried white Gatorade (I think its called Glacier Frost Cherry) because it didn't have all the crazy dyes in it, and he must have liked the taste because he sucked down 1.5 bottles in a day! He perked way up after getting the Gatorade in him (electrolytes I guess) and has been on the mend since. Since the doctor said give him stuff he will eat, we also offered him some McDonald's french fries and a few mini marshmallows, which he loves, and he ate about 10 of those in a sitting after eating nothing all day.

My 3 year old just got over a random virus with high fever (102-103)and no appetite for 5 days. All he wanted was milk. He's over 40 pounds at 3, so lack of appetite is not normal for him! The pediatrician ran several tests (flu, urine, throat culture) and everything was negative. It finally just went away as suddenly as it came. Hope he feels better soon!

My 14 month old LO was just hospitalized for bronchiolitis (she's fine now!). She didn't eat anything solid for about 3 days, but drank milk and water regularly. The hospital doctor was fine with discharging her because she was drinking milk, and said not to worry as long as she was getting nutrition from milk and her appetite would come back when she recovered. They were right, as soon as she started feeling better she was back to her favorite foods.

Hope he feels better soon!

My son isn't much of an eater when he's not feeling well (and anytime really, he's not a big eater) but I try to make sure he gets enough fluids. I would push fluids and let him get as much rest as possible.

Last winter, E was sick with a respiratory virus and he had nearly zero appetite for a whole 2 weeks. His pediatrician just wanted us to keep an eye out for signs of dehydration, but otherwise wasn't concerned. We ended up feeding him anything that he wanted, just to get calories in him. Which ended up being mostly milkshakes for us.

I've gone through a couple sicknesses with my 15 month old, and she never wants to eat when she is sick. She will drink sips of milk, but I always offer her food, and something easy like yogurt, fruit, pouches, etc. I used to worry SO MUCH every time she wouldn't eat, but I've learned to let it go a bit, and let it pass. Each time, she has picked up eating when she started feeling better.

Our ped said when she is sick and not eating, to try and get anything in her (if possible), even something like flat ginger ale, and ice pops.

My son has been sick since Sunday and not really eaten the past few days. He has randomly been drinking milk and eating a few apple slices the past few days. He has been spiking fevers which we can bring down with Advil. We are on vacation and he's clingy and lethargic. When do I start to worry? Or just let this pass since we are able to bring his fever down... He's 3 and never really gotten sick like this he is usually same activity level and eating habits.
