Huge difference between memorizing saying 1-10 and really counting. Memorizing is no different than another song or saying and I don't think it's a milestone to even measure. I wouldn't be worried unless a child is 4 and can't count to 10.

@Mrs. Lion: I agree saying is different than understanding. My LO says most of the alphabet and "counts" to six at 19 months but they are just song lyrics to her. Half the time there is an "up above the world so high" in the middle of the alphabet instead of letters. I think she's an early singer.

LO is 22 months and i have never tried to see what he count to on his own. he can name the numbers 1 to 10 in a book no problem. and recently i pointed to stuff and said "one" and he said "two". so maybe i will work on it more with him and see what he can learn. i am not worried about it though and i definitely think all kids will vary in their skills at this age.

If a child can't count to 10 by kinder, it's def a red flag. That being said, I had a ton of pre-k kids this year who couldn't count to 10/or recognize numerals when I tested them at beginning of year.

LO could do it around 22 months, but he can't actually count--like if I showed him 3 objects, he might count to 3, but he might count to 5! I wouldn't worry about it :) (although TBH I was worried about it, so I totally know how you feel!)

I don't know what's considered normal, but W started counting to ten at 26.5 months (I remember the first day she did it, lol) but I think it's something they should know by pre-k, so 3 or 3.5. She's got time!

Agrees with other PP's who say that some kids just decide to do these things at their own pace. For a long time my daughter flat out refused to say any letters or numbers, and she would yell at me when I tried to sing the ABCs. Then one day out of the blue she sang the entire alphabet song. A week later I overheard her counting to 11 with her baby sitter as she climbed the stairs.

E can count to 20; sometimes a few numbers between 14-17 get mixed up. She also understands the relationship between 1, 2 and 3 (like if you ask how many of X item there are, she's good about getting it right if it's 1-5 items). I don't know what's average......neither my husband or I are good at math so I doubt she's a genius :silly:

I'm sure there's a huge range of normal; and I wouldn't worry about it!

@HLK208: there is a big difference between saying the numbers 1-20 and actually having the understanding of one to one correspondance of 1-20. Being able to count objects to 20 is much different than reciting/memorizing the names of numbers in order.

My 27 month old got really good at counting to 10 around 22 months old, but didn't know her colors at all then. Currently she will talk to you about colors all day long but seems to have forgotten how to count. She either skips numbers (3 seems to get dropped a lot) or just flat out refuses. Maybe it's a control issue?

@yellowbird: my 28 month old is the same way. There are things I KNOW that she knows, but very, very rarely will she " perform" as I just don't think she's motivated that way.

@HLK208: I don't know when they properly should be able to, but if she's anything like my LO, she probably just doesn't like to perform on demand! I don't think it's anything to worry about and she'll get the hang of it.

she may just not care! lol - I know that sounds bad, not sure how to really word it. like O is obsessed with alphabet, numbers, reading, etc. But if I try to do certain things with her, she totally blows me off. Just not interested! Like building with legos, she's not super into coloring (occasionally, but gets bored really fast), etc.

I think just like some infants are more fine vs gross motor, language vs motor, toddlers and preschoolers are the same :)

DS was 27 months when he could count to 10 without help. DD is 27 months right now and when I ask her to count ten she says, "2,3,5,10!" And when I work with her, she has no interest in learning the numbers or tells me I'm wrong

DS is pretty good at math at 5 years old so maybe he has a mathematical brain? What's normal?
