@erinbaderin: I tried my old cloth diapers and both girls had pee all over their beds halfway through the night--they couldn't hold the volume of pee and I had doubled up on pads.

@Mommy Finger: I raised this a few months ago (reusing dry pull-ups) and quite a lot of people here “admitted” to doing it. I totally do - they’re little, my kids bathe right before bed, and I can’t justify throwing out a clean pull-up every night.

Which hmm, makes me think I should just get some reusable ones....how is this just occurring to me?!?!

@Anagram: You know, I was thinking about reusing the dry pull ups but didn't know if that was gross. :)

@PinkElephant: DS1 is the same in that he definitely doesn't remember getting up when we wake him but he doesn't always wake up enough to actually use the bathroom!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I really like the suggestion about talking up all of the other things he can do as it's so great to see him proud. This is just going to be a road we'll have to travel.

My almost 3 year old started waking up dry immediately after potty training, so it's been +6 months that she's been 95% night trained. But my just-turned-5 year old still need a pull-up.

Neither girl needs a pull-up at nap, but they still wear one at home just in case. Theybwear the same size pull up, so I just reuse all the dry ones, sometimes 2-3 times before tossing them. So all the dry nap time pull-ups go back on at night. DD2s dry pull-ups are sometimes reused again, especially when I do pull-up over the panties.

Long story short, I still put them on both girls, but I reuse dry ones so our overall consumption if pullups is greatly reduced. Less than 1 box a month.

Do you think it would help DS1 to talk about things that he is particularly "skilled" at, or did earlier than his brother? (he learned to ride a bike really early, or read, etc...)

You mentioned his awareness that friends no longer sleep in pull ups, and explaining that it will happen when he's ready.... but perhaps a concrete example of something that he excels at or did early compared to DS2 would give him some more tangible understanding and make him feel proud of himself, so that DS2 stopping to wear pull ups would bother him less?

We're in a similar place, except that DD2 isn't fully night trained, and doesn't give a darn about it, so I haven't pushed it.

Now that she turned six, I HAVE started waking DD1 at night before I go to bed to use the bathroom. Her feelings were similar to your DS1, and I think doing SOMETHING makes all of us feel like we're making progress, though she still wears the pull up at night. I'd say when I wake her at night, she's dry about 75% of the time in the AM (maybe more) and she goes right back to sleep - she doesn't even remember being awake.

I wouldn't do pull ups for the younger either.

Another possible option: maybe see if he'd prefer to use cloth trainers (like https://www.nickisdiapers.com/kangacare-rumparooz-lil-learnerz-training-pants-2-packs.html#tab-2 )? Since they are more like underwear, maybe he'd feel less self-conscious?

@Mommy Finger: I agree with everyone. I think it will just be a loooot of talking to him about doing things when you're ready, and how that's different for everyone, and that he is amazing and still a big boy in every way, etc. I love that you are so in-tune with him and understand how he may feel!

Maybe just don't make a big deal about the younger one wearing underwear? Or if the older one asks, say that you're all out of small pull-ups but yay, there are still big ones!

DD was night trained probably a year, or more, before her big brother who's 2.5 years older. It's never really been a problem, even though they're very competitive about everything else. It's a bit different because we did let him ditch diapers once he was dry most nights, so no one's in pull-ups at this point... his accidents are usually very small so we can handle it.

I think it’s great you’re so sensitive to your older DS’s feelings, and understand why your DH would want to keep your younger DS in pull-ups too, but I wouldn’t. Both my brother and I wet the bed on and off until we were maybe 8. I hope for your son’s sake that he outgrows it sooner, but if not, that’s a long time to keep YDS in pull ups if they aren’t necessary.

I feel for your DS. I remember the embarrassment. My parents never made me feel bad about it, but I knew I wet the bed much longer than other kids. I was a super deep sleeper too.

I wouldn't make the youngest wear a pull up they don't need. It's a waste of money and terrible for the environment.

DS1 is 5.5 and is still in pull ups at night. I know it's totally normal and we'll get there when he's ready. We already stop him from drinking after dinner, make him go before bed, and try to get him to go before we got to bed but we're still not to a consistent place and I know it's starting to bother him. He's a super deep sleeper so he just doesn't wake up when he has to go.

DS2 on the other hand was basically born night trained. Now that he's fully potty trained, he can be done with pull ups and just wear undies but he really doesn't care either way.

DS1 is super sensitive and we're fearful of how he'll react knowing that his little brother doesn't have to wear pull ups anymore but he does. He's also made comments about how he knows his friends also don't have to wear pull ups anymore. We've talked a lot about how it'll happen when he's ready and sometimes it just takes a little longer. DH wants to just keep DS2 in pull ups until DS1 is ready. My wallet and my environmental conscience says absolutely not.

Has anyone else dealt with this? Any advice?
