@Eminthevalley: FWIW we were at one point on antibiotics, motrin, zyrtec, and delsym. And at my heart I am anti meds for kids, but it was necessary. We hadn't slept in weeks.

@2PeasinaPod: interesting. I tried mucinex during the day and it seemed to make him worse. I understand how mucinex works but it didn't seem to be helping. We did Benadryl and I would like to try the Delsym, but now it turns out he has an ear infection, and between antibiotics and tylenol I don't want to mess with anything new.

Mucinex makes a multi-symptom cold medicine that we used once for LO (who is 4) that is approved for 4+. It's the first one in the link below:

http://www.mucinex.com/products/children-s-mucinex/

Kept him from coughing all night. He's also one who coughs so much he'll throw up. So we needed to do something.

If it isn't getting better I'd go back and ask about wheezing. My son has reactive airway disease (like asthma but the trigger is a cold/cough/virus) so basically anytime he gets a cough I give him albuterol. It opens up his airways to let him cough more effectively which means less coughing in the long run. I'm not sure if he wheezes every time but the Ped said to assume every cough is wheezy so we give it everytime and it always helps! We also have to give him qvar daily which helps calm his lungs since he gets chronic coughs. So anyway if it keeps happening I'd ask the ped about albuterol!

@Eminthevalley: did the benedryl help? We have used Delsum before (on a terrible, horrible, awful car trip where she coughed so much she threw up multiple times). It helped her fall asleep, at least...

Our doctor recommends Benadryl as well. She claims that it not only helps them sleep, but it suppresses the cough as well. I was really hesitant about it at first, but it really did help. The 2 nights that we used it, he woke up at 2:30 coughing when it wore off.

@Eminthevalley: my doctor also prescribes Bromfed dm. Our oldest is currently sick right now and we give it to her before bed. It makes her a little sleepy, but it's a cough suppressant +decongestant and it really seems to help.

Our ped also says using the breathing treatment machine with the saline packs really helps with the coughing.

We went through this back at thanksgiving time. DD and I would end up on the couch together b/c for some reason she can soothe herself back to sleep faster if shes by me. We did a dose of benedryl or motrin/ibuprofen and vics on chest and feet. But honestly I don't think anything "worked" just had to run it's course. Took literally almost 2 weeks

DS had a really bad cough and we ended up at urgent care at 10pm on Christmas. The dr gave him a one dose steroid and recommended kids Benadryl to help him sleep. He might've recommended mucinex too.

The Hyland's nighttime cough is AMAZING. D had an outrageous cough while we were on vacation and though I was strictly no cold meds before 4, I was desperate and the Hyland's is mostly natural, so we gave it a shot. He slept for like 12 hours the first night we gave it to him - better than he'd slept in a year! Seriously.

If that doesn't work, I'd go back to the ped and ask for a nebulizer. Mine just rented one to us for A, even though the crackles were deep in her lower lobes.

DS is prone to night coughing fits whenever he gets sick so the doctor prescribed an inhaler we could use anytime when he's not sleeping. I wouldn't hesitate to push your doctor for more. It's not easy to get him to take it from the chamber, but it does help the inflammation and relaxes everything. It doesn't completely resolve it, but along with steamy bath, Vicks on feet, dose of Advil, humidifier, elevation for his crib, it's the best we can do.

I could have written this :( I am so sorry! We are going through it right now too! DD has a sinus infection and with the cough and post nasal drip she hasn't slept since Sunday Night!

It is awful, we do it all!! Hudifier, propping her up, Vicks, Zarbees, honey...NOTHING helps! I posted on FB today that her cough at this point is like nails on a chalk board!

I feel so bad for her! DH even crawled into bed with her to help her sit up/sleep that didn't help either!

She did get antibiotics from DR yesterday so I am hoping that kicks the infection soon and the drip

She actually took a 2 hr nap today, THANK GOD!

We are on day three of coughing nearly constantly all night and no nap because coughing too much. I'm losing my mind! He's 4. Dr/nurse says honey only and I'm sorry, but even with specific dosing instructions honey doesn't appear to do &@$! I am at a loss.
