@Mrs. Jacks: You are completely right about how lucky we are- oddly enough, these episodes remind us of how she is never sick. She doesn't even get sick after the attack, just has the attack, gets treatment, recovers and it's done. And I plan to continue with traditional treatment ;-). We tried the cool mist, steamy bathroom, cool air, etc. each time except the first (because we didn't know) but they haven't worked, so bring the steroids on!
@Mrs. Jump Rope: We have definitely tried to pinpoint a cause, but as far as we can tell it can be ANYTHING that irritates her respiratory tract. Reflux, a cold, a recent coughing fit. That is why I agree most with the doc who called it something like 'reactive airway disease' instead of croup. I understand now that 'croup' refers to the characteristics of the reaction rather than the name of the virus, but 3 of the 4 times it has happened she never developed any sign of an illness at all, so I find it hard to believe she was reacting to an illness.
@SeptMomma12: @autumnlove: hugs  hospital + anyone we love but especially out LOs is just SO scary.

@lizzywiz: This is beautiful. Unfortunately I can relate. My LO was hospitalized in February for a particularly aggressive case of RSV. I dropped him off at day care in the morning with what seemed like a mild cold and by 5pm he was in the PICU on oxygen for a week. Nine months later and my heart still races when I think about the suddenness of it.

I'm sorry you had another round of this last night! I would encourage you to keep up with the traditional treatments, even if you add on alternative stuff...

I'm struck every day how one minute life is completely normal and mundane: one minute 11 year old is trotting around an arena on a horse, the next minute she's on the ground with a devastating head injury. One minute toddler is totally fine, next minute they ingest a button battery that ruins their intestines. It's all too damn fragile for my taste... But I have no say in the matter!

I will say that I'm glad your little one's issues are so reversible and that they'll get better with time. None of this is easy... But those are good things. Hug!

Oh, how scary for you all. I'm so sorry you have to go through this. Hopefully soon it will all be a distant unpleasant memory and everyone will be healthy. I think any choice you make in the heat of the moment is the right choice for your baby, so often we just have to trust our gut and try not to second guess our decisions.

@lizzywiz: The first time I had to take LO to the ER, it was 3 a.m., and I was home alone (hubs was at work trying to meet some impending deadline). I remember after quickly getting over the initial panic, all I did was make one decision after another, i.e., what do I need, where do I take her, how do I get there, what do I do if there are problems in the car (to avoid letting the panic set it). Even after her surgery (there were pretty serious complications while she was recovering), the hardest decisions were always those that needed to be made in the shortest amount of time.

@MsLipGloss: it's the decision making that kills me. Dose her at home? Take her in or don't take her in? Agree to the second dose of steroids even though it is a lot? In the ER there is no time to think about it.
Last night they did chest x-rays. She has had them before and I was crushed by the choice of exposing her to more radiation and possibly finding something that could help her or saying no, since they never come up with anything.
It is very surreal.

@lizzywiz: I often think about how everything can change in an instant and does for so many families. I think the best you can do is be thankful for each "normal" day, love and care for LO with all your heart, and pray that the medical team can take over when they need to.

Big hugs to you, that sounds like a very stressful day. I'm glad she's okay! And I also hope they find a way to monitor her condition and prevent it from escalating.

@lizzywiz: My LO had surgery at 8 months (and there were ER visits prior to that) . . . the feeling of powerlessness was paralyzing, and I was consumed by thoughts that life was ridiculously fragile and tragically short. I didn't sleep for 3 days because every time I closed my eyes all I could see was a world without my baby. I am so sorry you are going through this. I would NEVER wish that on any parent!!!
