My DD was 5 too when I felt the need to get her her own desk. She had daily homework in kindergarten and I just felt like she needed her own space, otherwise it was easier for her little sister to bother her while she was trying to work! So we got her a desk at around 5.5 years old. It's from Ikea.

I was wondering the same thing! Right now we're doing homework on various tables, but I think it would be nice for her to have a desk in her room. I was thinking of getting one for next year when she starts kinder in the fall...

@woodentulip: always go to ikea for dressers! don't like spending a lot on them... maybe when they're a little older.

I would probably do it around 4 or 5. My in laws have a really cute antique flip top desk waiting for Liam when he's old enough.

@Mrs. Bee: This is the thing-artwork and the bit of homework we have so far is all done at the kitchen table or their tiny play table. And for now, I like that best because it keeps it as a social time. I don't want her to feel like she has to go to her room on her own to enjoy those things! Maybe I will hold off for now...

But along the same lines...have you found any awesome dressers? ;)

i'm redoing (or rather putting it together for the first time) charlie's room right now and didn't put in a desk because it is so small. if we had the room (turning 5 next month), i definitely would have.

But he usually does his homework on the dining table, or we have a small table that folds up that he uses.

My son has one in his room, it was part of the furniture set. There is also a hutch on top, with two additional shelves. It's considered "youth" furniture, though, so it is smaller scale.

The desk part is his bookshelf, it functions perfectly for that right now.

Hey everyone! I have been thinking a lot lately about wanting to get my daughter a desk. She just turned 5 and I feel like it would help us keep 'her' (note: not meant for our younger kid to play with) art supplies separate, give her a place to practice her writing, and so on.

But I am not sure if 5 is too young? When did any of you get a child a desk?
