@skibobrown: I know you wrote this a little while ago, but I'm re-visiting because a friend of mine is very upset that her DS is not meeting milestones. He is almost 7 months old and not sitting up and he's not doing well at eating. Maybe now I can tell her that the eating might come easier when he can sit. (She is going to she a physiotherapist soon to talk about the sitting).

I've heard that you want to wait until your baby can sit up on their own and are showing interest in foods. It can be before or after 6 months, depending on the child. We're aiming for 6 months, but I'll be watching my daughter for signs that she's ready.

@Sammyfab: Oh also we found the spitty situation actually improved on solids!! Or maybe it was a timing coincidence....

@cvbee: You are right to follow your gut (so to speak). New science and new recommendations are always a bit dicey in my mind, although years from now they may turn out to be correct. I have a feeling other risk factors for allergies and things like celiac disease are much more important than where in that window you start with solids.

@sloaneandpuffy: thanks for this note. Very interesting. Neither DH nor I have allergies so I'm not as concerned about allergies as maybe some others might be. I just like following 'the rules' and it looks like this is one of those things where there aren't really rules to follow and I'll have to use my mommy senses.

@cvbee: I just remember something like these recommendations coming out a year or two ago, and I also heard at the time that baby food industry influences were involved, so who knows. I know we're just one case but FWIW my child has no allergies....

We are also going to start at 6 months but we won't push anything until he's ready. At 4 months LO is still slumped over when he's sitting in the Bumbo or high chair and he's a spitty mess on BM alone....I can only imagine what kind of mess solids would bring!

6 months. I know people who started at 4 but I didn't see any advantages to that. Solids are fun but they do complicate life a bit so no hurry!

We started at 6 months. Even then I thought it was too early as she had no interest. Giving her purees didnt help, so we waited until 6.5 months when she showed interest and went the baby led weaning route. You will know. I wouldnt force solids on Liv. When we tried, she clearly had NO interest, so I didnt push it.

The pediatrician gave us the go ahead at her 4 month checkup but we didn't start until she was 5 months. Even still, we only do it once every other day. She seems interested in it so I guess it was a good time for us.

@cvbee: oh geez. Why do "they" keep changing their minds!

I think I'll kinda let my LO drive this one based on ped recommendation. But within that 4-6 month window. My nieces and nephews all started solids at around 4 months.

ohmygosh...crazy to think that she can be starting solids in just TWO months then!

i waited until 6 months with both charlie and olive. charlie didn't really show interest in eating before then (or after then either!).

olive actually started showing some interest (looking at you while you're eating) before 6 months, but since she was born 5 weeks early, i waited until 6 months to start.

So I thought I knew that the 'right' time to introduce solids was at 6 months, but then yesterday I read this article that said that 'they' are changing their minds about this and saying now that you need to do it in the 4-6 month window.

http://www.parentscanada.com/baby/should-babies-go-on-diets

It's freaking me out a bit, but my experienced Mom friends say I'll just 'know' when it's the right time for my LO. But I'm still freaking out.

Any thoughts?
