We actually may have forced ourselves to do it sooner than later... The bed is bought and has to be delivered by the end of February. Assembly is included so it doesn't make sense to wait... Eek!

We're waiting till sometime in the next couple of months and LO is 3. She never tries to climb out. LO 2 is coming in May so we need to move her before then.

if everything is fine, i don't see the point in potentially messing a good thing! We moved DS when he was just over 2.5 because i was pregnant and moving to a new house, so it was a good time to transition him. Otherwise i am not sure when we would have moved him.

We waited until he was just over 3 because he was sleeping great and never once tried to get out. The main motivation for moving him at last was that he was asking to be in a "big boy" bed and we knew he was ready. No issues and I'm glad we waited!

We waited until just before her 3rd birthday but if she had potty trained earlier, I would have put her in the toddler bed then too!

Thanks everyone. It's funny to me that in the poll, "wait until 3+" is #1 but with "now" as a close second!

@BelugaBean: @lawbee11: See, LO is not climbing out and sleeps great in her crib, so I feel like there is no real reason to move her, except that we are "supposed to"!

We moved her at 2.5 because her sleep was going downhill. We thought maybe she wanted more room and just needed a change. The transition was super smooth for us and her sleep was so much better. The big downside was she stopped napping when we switched but her nighttime sleep was still good. We also knew we were going to try to have a baby soon (had DD2 in October) so we figured why not go ahead and get it out of the way.

We just put the toddler rail on her crib yesterday. She's almost 29 months. Yesterday was rough. She didn't nap at all and she kept falling all the way out or partially out of bed. When I checked on her this morning she was sleeping on the floor! I read a lot of people on here say that their LO just stayed in bed, didn't realize they could get out, etc. but that was not our experience. She was basically out of the bed before the door was shut. She had started climbing out of her crib so we didn't really have a choice. I would've waited til 3 if we could have. That said she's currently napping and still completely in the bed so I'm hoping it improves from here once the newness of it wears off.

We got LO a toddler bed for Christmas. She's 28 months. DD2 could have stayed in the playpen but I was ready to move her. She's doing GREAT in her new bed. Only had real problems the first night. She's always telling me that she loves her new bed how tired she is and that she wants to lay in it some more.

She got up several times the first night until I had to threaten to take her new bed away. And actually I did put her in the playpen for about 10 minutes but she screamed the whole time so I told her she could have her new bed back but she wasn't allowed to get up and she's been doing well ever since. She gets up sometimes but usually only once, I don't have to constantly put her back to bed all night, thank God. So far I'm proud of how well shes doing.

We moved her from a crib to a twin (skipped the toddler bed) when she was 2 years, 4 months. She went from waking up multiple times a night to completely STTN as soon as we switched! My middle DD is 25 months and we have not switched her out of a crib yet because her sleep is so great.

We waited until after our son was 3 since he wasn't trying to climb out and wasn't in danger of hurting himself. We got tired of hoisting him in and out, and we also thought it would be better for potty training. He did great with the transition and knows he has to stay in his bed. No coming into our room. It helps that he also has a toddler clock that turns green when it's ok for him to get out. But he usually just calls me: "Mommyyyyy, the light is greeeeeeen. I'm calling your naaaaaaame."

I'd say hold off as long as you can :)

We just upgraded our LO to a big girl bed. She turned 3 in November and keeps climbing out, so its time. We also want to finish potty training :)

FIL got LO a big girl bed for Christmas. We still have to get the mattress (and box spring?) plus bedding. She's 26 months right now and sleeps great in her crib every night and every nap right now. I am very scared of ruining a good thing!

It will probably be 1-2 years before another LO is in the picture to get her crib and she has made no attempts to climb out so neither of those are reasons to move her. So... When to do it?

I do think that since she's totally potty trained, if she could get in and out of bed at night, she might be able to "night train." Right now she often holds it at night but goes in her pull up as soon as she wakes up. So that's one reason. Plus, maybe the longer we wait, the harder it will be?
