Our hospital has a thing where they get about 5 or 6 pediatricians together so you can go meet and talk to them all at once. That helped us narrow it down and then we went to our favorite, which also was recommended by friends. I wanted to personally see their office and meet them to make sure that we clicked, and so I could ask some questions. I think I was 31 weeks when we did that.

We started calling to set up meet-and-greets with pediatricians around 35-36 weeks. We came with a short list of questions and spent about 30 minutes with the pediatricians (which was very generous of them). The pedi we chose did have privileges at the hospital I delivered at so the hospital called him (per his instructions to us at the meet-and-greet) and he came about 2 hours after he was born.

Our OB mentioned starting to look at our last visit - 18 weeks. He gave us some suggestions on who to use, based on where we live. We found out my co-worker, who lives in the same town as us, used our same OB and really likes their Ped, so we'll probably use them. They were one of the recommended ones by our doc. I would say starting to look at any time is fine. I hear they'll do open houses and such so you can get in and see what the office is like.

We called the pediatrician we selected at about 34 weeks. She already knew we had chosen her, since we are friends... but I let her office know at 34 weeks.

The office will tell you whether they have privileges at the hospital you are delivering at. If not, one of the hospital's pediatricians will see your child after delivery. Make sure the hospital pediatrician has the fax number for your pediatrician so that your baby's admit records get to your pediatrician before your first visit. (Usually 1-2 days after hospital discharge).

We called our pediatrician from the hospital a couple hours after the baby was born to schedule the first appointment.

Since you've already selected someone, you don't really need to do the whole "meet and greet" visit. (Which pediatricians do un-reimbursed by the way). I'm also skipping my whole talk on how to select a pediatrician. I hope this helps.

I'm 28 weeks pregnant now and wondering when (and really what I need to do) to schedule a visit with a pediatrician. Looking for advice on that first contact--did you call folks that had been recommended to you and interview them? If so, when? Did they want you to come in for a visit before the birth? Once you had selected your pediatrician, did they visit the baby in the hospital after birth, or did you simply see the hospital's pediatrician?

I think I've found the pediatrician I want to use--I'm not sure I'm keen on interviewing a bunch of folks since this person has come highly recommended by lots of parents, and we know him personally, too. But I'm not sure when I need to reach out and make that call, or what to say to the office when I do call. All advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
