We started solids around 5.5-6 months. Started with dinner, then added lunch at daycare around 7 months. Around 8 months we added afternoon snack. So right now she breastfeeds on wake-up, gets 6oz bottle of BM at daycare around 9, gets solids (usually a jar of veggies/fruits) followed by a 4oz bottle for lunch, same for snack around 3, and then dinner around 5 she usually eats 4-6oz of solids, then nurses to sleep around 7. We did the snack rather than breakfast mostly because of time issues - in all honesty, I just do not have time to sit and feed her purees in the morning and she's not quite good enough that I could give her some solids and let her go to town without one of us sitting there with her.

We didn't start solids until 6 months either, but she's a week short of 8 months and up to 3 meals a day now. As soon as she actually started eating the food i was giving her I added in more meals. So maybe a month of once a day, 2 weeks of twice a day and then on to three times a day. I had hopes it would help her sleep better... nope.

@erinbaderin: oh that makes sense about the allergies. I hadn't thought like that. I was just thinking the more full at night the more sleep we all get.

@ShootingStar: that's us too- round the clock eating...breakfast, lunch, pm snack, dinner, and 5 bottles. I'm hoping that LO doesn't get some kind of oral fixation complex. Lol

I would start solids at lunch instead of dinner in case there's an allergic reaction, so it won't come on while they're sleeping. Otherwise I'm following - we started my son on solids at 6 months and a month later we're still mostly just doing once a day.

We started solids early with my second because he was small and he was refusing bottles... we did oatmeal mixed with breast milk or formula that was pretty runny at lunchtime to start... made that thicker. then we added veggies to the oatmeal mix after a couple of weeks.

I think around 8 months we got up to 3 meals and 2 snacks. I seriously felt like he was eating around the clock because he was still taking 4 bottles a day, plus night time feeds.

I would just take it slow. Make sure the foods you add are nutrient dense and have lots of healthy fats. And keep an eye on formula consumption because you still want most of his calories to come from that.

Also not the same situation because we didn't start solids until 6 months, but I started off feeding DD solids 1x per day (usually at dinner). After a few weeks I added in a lunch of solids. I'll probably wait another month or so and then we'll start doing breakfast.

The amount she eats isn't really consistent though. We offer a fruit or veggie puree and sometimes she eats it all and other times she eats none of it.

We had to introduce solids because our LO was underweight too. At 4.5 months we started giving him cereal twice a day- breakfast and lunch. We did that for a week or two and then added cereal at dinner. After about 3 weeks we introduced veggies.

We didn't start solids until 6 months, so I'm not sure if what I'm about to say will be relevant at all, haha. BUT we started adding additional meals/snacks on a one month interval. So:

6mo: dinner of solids
7mo: breakfast of solids
8mo: lunch of solids

As he ate more and more for each meal, the amount of milk/formula he drank started to go down naturally - so around 10 months, we started adding a morning snack, and around 11 months, we started adding an afternoon snack. We switched to cow's milk right at a year, but he's otherwise been on the same schedule (3 meals, two snacks) ever since.

My son is underweight (11th percentile) and is going to have an additional weight check next week which is a month after his 4 month check up. At that appointment we got the go ahead to try solid food. So at this point he has 4 formula bottles/day (each about 7-8 ounces) and a little bit of baby oatmeal mixed with 2 ounces of formula around dinnertime.

I'm sure the pediatrician will give me more information next week, but when am I supposed to be giving solid food for more than just one meal? Also, do you start by adding lunchtime first or breakfast time?

I just did this with my 1.5 year old and I've already forgotten... ugh...
