If e doesn't eat well at dinner, I offer her a snack before bed. Usually nut butter on a spoon. Sometimes she eats great and sometimes not. Dinner is at 530, bed is at 645. She's almost 16 months. We don't really do a lot of milk because is so filling

I don't go more than 4 hours without food so I actually have a slice of Ezekiel bread and PB before bed. Not that weird to me, unless you eat a huge meal. My dinners are small, though

No bedtime snacks here, either. My son will be two at the end of the month. We eat dinner somewhat late...6:30/7pm. Sometimes we will feed our son an earlier dinner around 5/5:30, depending on his daily schedule. But either way, we've never done a bedtime snack. Sometimes we'll have a little dessert after dinner...a little ice cream or a popsicle in the summertime, but other than that, dinner holds him over until the morning. (Bedtime is 8pm).

Ah that makes sense, we eat dinner usually 2-3hrs before her bedtime so it made sense to me to give her cereal before bed lol. Although she nurses to sleep so that could probably count as smack before bed too

If D wants a snack, it has to be within an hour of finishing dinner and he has to have eaten his dinner well. He doesn't get anything besides water before bed. They make him stay awake too long when he's trying to get to sleep.

@NurseMommy: I just started a snack before bed last night! She ate dinner a little early (like 4 something) and we were out and about so I gave her milk and snack at 7 or 8 and then more milk right before bed (at maybe 8 something. ..) She slept in an hour and a half longer...

No snack before bed (never heard of it!). Dinner is 6/630 and he can have milk or water with dinner. Bath around 7, Jammie's brush teeth, books and bed (he can have water right before bed). Lights out by 745/8. He's 26 months and it's been this routine for a long time - since we ditched the bed time bottle. We used to offer a sippy of milk after bath but he never really drank it. If he told me he was hungry I would let him have a small snack before bed but I wouldn't make a habit of it. At this age, hunger has very little to do with sleep!

@NurseMommy: I've never heard of a kid having a bedtime snack! Maybe it's a regional thing. We eat around 6 and he goes to bed around 7:30 or 8 and typically sleeps until 8. He doesn't get anything to eat or drink but water after dinner and is 19 months. He used to nurse before bed but wasn't getting much at all after 14m and then turned me down Around 16m.

It was a weird adjustment from when he was young and I fed him as close to bed as possible so we got more sleep! But often he's not even hungry for breakfast until 9 or so.

I would think a bedtime snack would discourage good eating at dinner?

We have dinner two hours before bedtime, and by the time we're done eating, playing, bath time and jammies, there's no time for a snack. I've never heard of having a snack before bed for kids... Occasionally mama has a glass of wine, though ;)

This thread reminded me of my nephew. He was staying with us earlier this month for a week and it drove me crazy that he NEEDED a snack before bed. What the...he's 13 years old, but I guess my parents (who are raising him) have gotten him and his sister into a routine that includes a snack before bed. He's been getting a snack before bed since he moved in with them (at 5 years old, his sister was 2). My dad works at a juvenile detention facility and they are also required to provide a snack before bed. The nutritionist strongly suggests it as part of the meal plan and they have to provide them with something. Usually it's fruit or cookies and milk. Sometimes a small serving of cereal.

We give LO (19 months old) a small snack if she asks. Usually a piece of fruit or string cheese, with a glass of water. I can't even remember when she started, maybe 17 months? I want to say right after we weaned her...she used to nurse to sleep so I'm sure we created the habit of eating before bed.

I'd say once bedtime is not right after dinner. Then I'd give a small snack.

Here bedtime is right after dinner so no need for a snack. Growing up we always had a snack before bed.

@NurseMommy: She can drink as much as she wants whenever she wants. Milk or water. Usually she chooses milk since she drinks it at meals and she already has that cup available until bedtime. Since potty training, we've stopped letting her drink anything after bath. So, our evenings are dinner and play (she can drink whatever during this time) and then bath, family devotional, and bed (no drinks during this). She's 26 months.
