Oh, and I know when it's fairly empty because I squeeze my nipple and milk doesn't shoot out. Very scientific.

I had such crazy oversupply at the beginning that I would feed 3 times in a row on one side before switching...and still have more. Then I got very sick and didn't eat for three days which knocked my supply down to a normal(ish) level. Don't really recommend that! Now she's lazy so she eats on one side for the let down and then wants to switch, she never finishes a side off.

My baby never falls off one side, she sticks to one side 4ever and because of what I've heard about fore milk and hindmilk I just feed her from one side and if I'm not too lazy I pump the other side while she is nursing. If not then the next feed time I offer the other breast. At the moment my supply is more than she is able to finish at one go so it works out

I did 20 minutes per side unless she fell off sooner, per my LC's recommendation. Unlike @CocoBee I never felt the letdown during any feeding (not all the unusual I'm told).

I let him eat as long as he wanted on one side, then he usually fell asleep. Next feeding he'd eat on the other side. But he would eat for 20-30 minutes at a time! so I knew he was full. As a newborn, he would eat every 1-1.5 hours. And you will get a feeling for when you're empty/full. It's pretty obvious. And by two weeks, you will feel when your milk lets down (feels like tingles or needles pricking you) and you'll know it's about time to feed that side.
My milk actually lets down when he is feeding on one side, which is pretty inconvenient because he usually only eats on one side at a time.

I just did about 15-20 minutes on each side as a newborn.

I had nO idea when I needed to switch so I just did 20 mins on each side. Eventually you'll be able to feel your boob empty.

I was told by my LC to go 20mins per side but she was getting too much foremilk and not enough hind milk so I just offer her one side now. She still (7weeks) doesn't empty my breast so I just let her go Neil she pops off.

I had been switching when Sawyer falls off naturally, before my milk came in. Since I have been over-producing, I only feed one breast at each feeding.

I think most babies fall off the breast when they're done. And then you're supposed to offer them the next breast. My LO doesn't yet (at 12 days) need to switch since my supply is still heavier than he needs at one feeding, so he just feeds off one.

So when you are breastfeeding a newborn how do you know when it's time to change breasts? Is it obvious like they stop drinking from one side after a certain amount of time?
