My first son moved to flexible soles shoes from Stride Rite once he was walking more steadily. I used them only when he was outside as protection. Inside he was barefoot (it was summer though!). My pediatrician told us to have him out of shoes as much as possible.

@PinkElephant: Same. Pediped Originals are my favorite. I buy them from Pediped outlet or wait for sales on the Pediped website. D started walking in July, and they held up REALLY well, even on my parents' paver patio.

I like the Originals for A (she'll be 1 in 2 weeks) now, too, because she's not walking yet but she's cruising along everything and likes to climb, and I feel like they give her WAY more traction than socks (even grippy socks) or Robeez.

ETA: When they're walking more steadily, I just go with the PediPed Grip and Go - still a very flexible sole but sturdier than the Originals.

We switched to stride rites for outside around 1, I think. But, fwiw, my son at 22 months still wears robeez as his montessori school slippers. Hilariously, they are white with pink dots on them and bows, since they were extra slippers his teacher had in the class when he was slipping too much in the ones I sent. I have since gotten him better slippers, but he apparently demands "his" pink robeez instead, hahaha!

DS is 14.5 months and has been walking for 2 months. He wears stride rite shoes when outside and is in sock feet inside and at daycare.

DS1 was basically barefoot all the time but when he started walking at 12 months we got him Stride Rite SRTs. He was only wearing them at the park and at church on Sundays and he was only there like an hour at a time max so I wanted him to have a sturdy shoe. The rest of the time he was barefoot.

He started daycare at 16 months so he continued to wear SRTs but he prefers to be barefoot so he used to rip off his shoes and socks all the time.

He's 28 months and still in Stride Rites.

I love Pediped Originals, particularly for little girls (the mary janes are adorable!). They're still soft, but tough enough to work for walking outside. I never really loved Robeez, as cute as they are. Too flimsy for being outside, to slippery on our wood floors, IMO.

dad started walking at 15 months, and was wearing soft soled shoes until maybe 2 weeks ago when she sized out. She is almost 20 months and in a size 6 now

We did soft moccasin style shoes until he sized out and introduced "soft"-soled Stride-Rites once he was waking confidently for a few months.

We started hard soled shoes around 15 mos because she was outside on the playground at school but it was chilly outside and I was afraid her feet were getting cold. She still wears Robeez at home, however, at almost 2.5 years old - LO thinks they're slippers!

@oliviaoblivia: So little! OK, that's what I was thinking, harder soles (still super flexible) for walking outside, which will be a while since it's so cold. Robeez are still best for walking inside, and barefoot at home. I'll go up that extra half size.

We kept her in the see kai run baby shoes until she sized out. They are flexible leather soles with a small spot of rubber for traction. We loved them! She wore them hiking, playing outside- never had any issue and from what I've read flexible soft sole is best for as long as possible. She still wears see kai run but in kid sizes now. For rain/snow we used baby bogs which a pretty flexible as well and just switched to regular bogs this winter (she's nearly 4)

I moved them to harder soles when they started walking well enough to want to walk outside. Unfortunately that meant when they were in size two and harder soles aren't made that small. We've ruined so many pairs of Robeez on wet surfaces that I started buying the crappy made in China cheapies on Amazon.

@Foodnerd81: I adore robeez! DS has been walking for about six weeks and he's still in them. They're great. I'm in no rush to move to hard soles, though I am going to ask the ped at his 15 month appt next month.

You would think I would remember this from a couple of years ago, but when did you switch from very soft sole shoes, like Robeez, to a still soft but more formed shoe like Stride Rite soft motion shoes?

My 1 year old has just started walking, and her grandfather wants to buy her shoes for Christmas and is waiting for me to tell him exactly what to buy. I had her sized today but I'm wondering if I should go up an extra half size since she should be in Robeez longer... It's also winter, so will be a while before she's walking outside either way.
