@graceandjoy: I’m glad she’s back and feeling better! My oldest also used to always throw up from fever. No matter what the illness! She got strep a ton around 4-6 and that really made her sick. My middle almost never throws up though so it must be the kid - only a stomach bug would get him like that.

Honestly I would not have taken him in if I didn’t know about flu exposure and Preschool wasn’t being strict about it. He started to cool off yesterday and woke up today no fever and just some leftover cough. So three days of fever but not high that whole time. They want kids out a week for flu so he’ll still be home Friday but I’m so happy he won’t be sick for his party!

My update is DD1 is back to school today and we never brought her in. I feel like I had a decent handle on this. When she gets sick, she tends to vomit (bacteria in her stomach?), then fever for 1-2 days. I just made sure she didn't have any other symptoms that would point to something else like flu, strep, etc.

It is so hard to know when to take kids in. Based on my 1.5 year old's history (respiratory issues and ear infections), I will now take her in on day 2 of high fever, or day 3 at the very latest. With my more healthy 3 y.o. (only one UTI a 1.5 years ago that had vomitting with the fever), I'd take her day 3 or day 4 depending on symptoms. I will never again wait until day 5.

@periwinklebee: thanks. January birthdays are rough! I’ve actually already canceled at this place in the past due to severe croup the night before ... in both cases their first “friends” party. But I think I’ve got a good backup plan if needed.

@bhbee: So sorry! This happened to my Jan LO last year on his birthday (though different b/c he was too young to know it was his birthday). 105 fever and then he had an allergic reaction to tamiflu. ugh. I'm afraid we will have a repeat this year b/c there have been an unusually high # of flu cases at his daycare.

I really hope your guy is better in time for his party!

Well, decided to take him in since he was 103 at wakeup and I just needed some guidance on school and such. Positive for flu A. Decided not to treat since like @Jess1483 his asthma doesn’t seem triggered. His party is Saturday and she recommended seeing if he’s better by Thursday or not to decide. At least I know it’s easy to cancel there. Fingers crossed he’s better by then!

@bhbee: I’m sorry! I agree on calling first. I’d mostly just watch the breathing and so the inhalers and all that. My youngest had a nasty cold on her birthday and they all had it around Xmas.

@bhbee: aw poor thing! Definitely do a re do in a few days.

I am definitely worried about secondary infections. This is our first flu dx for our family so I got him on Tamiflu, elderberry twice daily and I am using essential oils on him and diffusing. Ain’t nobody got time for the darn flu!

@Canoli: that was our experience last year too - low grade fever and honestly not super sick - but she still missed an entire week of school because of a follow on infection that did bring a higher fever after she had started getting better :bummed:

I’m definitely going to call tomorrow and see what they say. It’s not that I think he needs to be seen really, what can you do, but that school wants to know who has it! He was 102.5 at bedtime an hour after Advil so he’s pretty sick, but is prone to high fevers with everything. He perked up a little to sing happy birthday with his special cake tonight but felt too sick to eat it :crying: - hopefully we get a redo in a day or so.

My son tested positive for flu B on Saturday. His symptoms were mild and kind of not like I expected for flu. Totally fine going to school on Friday. Then Friday at pick up asking to sleep in the car and low grade of 100 that night. Still low grade the next day but very tired. Positive test Saturday afternoon.

Our preschool is also pushing for a doctor visit/diagnosis before coming back to school after any fever. I feel like that’s a lot to ask though - spend close to $100 so that the doctor can shrug and says “it’s a virus”?? And expose my other kid(s) to all the germs there?

It's so hard! My 5 year old started with vomiting with fever around midnight Sat-Sun. Threw up on and off Sunday morning, then just fever (101-102). Same thing today. I've been monitoring symptoms but she doesn't seem to feel anything else besides fever... So I'm also debating whether to take her in tomorrow or not.

@bhbee: usually I don’t take kids in unless they’ve been sick for awhile but in our area it’s been a early and bad flu season particularly for kids so I would at least call the dr and go over the symptoms. They can tell you if they’ve been seeing flu and how it’s been presenting

I called into my insurance nurse line when my 5 year old looked like he had the flu. Massive lethargy and fever like that. I took him in to the doctor and we spent a ridiculous amount of money on Tamiflu for him. He was recovered within 24 hours. I don't think the Tamiflu was worth it for us.

Our doctor said Tamiflu is most effective if started within 48 hours of symptoms (although there's debate whether that's just the fever/lethargy vs the cold symptoms that can come on earlier) so if you think Tamiflu is needed, I'd go in now.

@Jess1483: yeah, the antivirals are really the only question I guess. He’s already on inhaled steroids, we’re giving albuterol (we do it whenever he is sick regardless of how much he’s coughing) and we have liquid prednisone on hand so we’ve avoided a serious flare for a couple years. I bet I can at least wait for tomorrow.

DS2 also has viral induced asthma, but when we got Flu A last year (we try vaccines), it didn’t trigger him at all, which was great. So fingers crossed for you guys. Given that info, I wouldn’t take him in and just proceed assuming it’s the flu (unless you’d give Tamiflu) unless it started to affect breathing. Do you have albuterol (or similar) on hand just in case?

ETA: I might take him in with this information if it were Friday. But I can’t imagine he would get so bad overnight that you couldn’t wait for tomorrow. But you know your kid best, especially with the asthma, it can be scary.

I tend to err on not taking in for fever, but wondering what others would do.

5yo (today is his bday!) started being off yesterday, fever by bedtime and 102 or so today. Just heard another in his preschool class has flu A and several others at his (relatively small) school also have it.

As an extra consideration, he has viral triggered asthma. It’s not too bad at the moment but he’s coughing. Other symptoms are minimal for now, main is fever/fatigue. Clearly doesn’t feel well.

Would you get him tested today? Wait a certain period? They might give him antivirals if he’s positive due to respiratory issues (not sure). That said last year my oldest was a false negative on the first test for flu A last year (positive 3 days later when she wasn’t getting better). And he seemed equally sick when he had what I think was Fifths on Christmas (bad year for illness timing!).
