@meadow: great idea to have a bunch of fun things to get them excited about!

@bhbee: @Chuckles: Great point about the anxiety, I think my oldest would feel exactly that way now that you mention it! I think we’ll wait until we know for sure and have a real closer timeline!

I think I would probably also wait until you were more sure about whether you're actually moving and your timeline before talking about it too much with your kids. That kind of unknown could make them anxious. Plus, if they decide to be really adamant about not moving, and you end up moving anyways, that's not a good way to start.
I don't have personal experience exactly, because DS was only 4 when we moved, but I love the idea from @meadow: of finding activities they'd like to do in the new city and showing them lots of pictures. If there's anywhere nearby like a neat park, kids museum, etc, that might get them excited.

We don’t have immediate plans to move but we think about it (would require a new job for DH first!). I definitely drop hints about what could be better if we move like everyone could have their own room maybe, rec room maybe, second story (since we live in a ranch now), cooler weather, etc etc.

But for my kids I would probably just tell them when it was decided vs asking for opinions. My oldest is very resistant to change and she’d be stressed thinking about it for too long! I’m sure that depends on the kid. But it would be better for them I think if we could start making concrete plans about the exciting parts.

Not from experience....but I'd def talk up the family aspect......sleepovers w grandparents / cousins.... more holidays w fam. Find out info about activities they love. (Eg soccer) and show them what programs are there (maybe pics online!)

I've posted before about our debate on whether to move to a different state to be close to DH's family and have a less crazy life in general. We put decision making on hold for a year because of Covid, so now we are deciding for sure by the end of this next school year. I'm just not sure if we should include our kids in some of our conversations considering moving. They are going into 3rd and 1st grade (and a preschooler but I'm less worried about him as he doesn't have any real connection to our current town yet!)

We'd be choosing to move for quality of life (better schools, closer to family, bigger house, better town resources, etc), instead of for a forced reason like a job relocation or something...so while I know it is ultimately DH and my decision I'm unsure if we should float it with the kids and make them part of the process. My gut says both of them would say they definitely wouldn't want to move, but I think most kids would probably say that!

If you've moved, how have you sold it to your kids as an exciting new adventure as opposed to leaving all their friends and things they know and love?
