If you have any sliver of doubt though, I would wait until a few weeks after the baby is born. You want to have that option. Also, I'm not sure what your insurance situation is, but you might want to find out how soon you would lose coverage if that's a concern for you.</p> <p>My HR department told me that if I decided to not come back from maternity leave for some reason, I would not have to repay them anything. I would definitely ask. I would have had to pay back the entire maternity leave (even though it was technically FMLA with my vacation days) plus a part of my medical benefits (subsidized by the company). Before I realized that I could get baby on COBRA I was considering staying until closer to me EDD, but since I know it is sort of a moot point now, I would really like to take the extra few weeks. I've heard of scenarios where an employee who doesn't return has to repay their employer for any insurance (particularly if your employer subsidizes a portion of your benefits) and/or leave paid on their behalf during that time. On one hand I do feel a little bit bad not telling them ahead of time (though, I did train the people doing my maternity cover so someone knows how to do most of what I do). But on the other, you do have to watch out for yourself. You have to consider things like, what if your DH loses his job? Or, what if something goes wrong and the baby is in the hospital for months and months or something or worse? My friend's very practical and kind of blunt dad pointed that out but it makes sense. I have been lurking for months now and have seen all sorts of helpful info so I figured I would throw my situation out there. </p> <p>I am currently 26 weeks pregnant and plan on leaving work to be a SAHM. Right now I am thinking I want to finish up here by late September so I can get everything setup and settled before baby gets here around Oct 20 (assuming baby wait until 40 weeks or more!). There is no maternity leave here, so anything I would have taken would be FMLA, so when people ask if I am taking the full leave I just say, yeah that's the plan. </p> <p>Did any of you ladies tell your boss your plans, or hint at them, before you gave notice? I work pretty closely with my direct supervisor so I feel a little badly about potentially blindsiding him, but at the same time I feel like they should know it is always a possibility. My plan was to give notice maybe Sep 6, to finish up on the 20th or possible the 27th if they wanted me to help train up my replacement and I was feeling up to it. I am the only one in my position so I don't want to screw over the team, I want to leave on good terms... I am just not sure what is the best way to do that! </p> <p>Any thoughts would be appreciated! </p>
