I actually have a friend who has two little ones and a husband and they all live with her parents. It works for them. They own a house that they rent out. I didn't know many people at our duty station and found out I was pregnant 2 weeks before he left. I lived with my parents for a short period of time but spent most of the year living with my grandparents. It was really great to have them there for my pregnancy and postpartum. My grandparents were so much help when it came to my LO! The plan was to find a smaller apartment soon after but instead I decided to leave for Asia and start anew. So back "home" was my last place of residence in the States. I left in early 2008. After the internship I was living at home on and off until I got my own apartment at 18. This is us. We actually live with recently divorced father in law in a three bedroom right now. My father in law, DH, 6month old DD, and myself. We have been saving and paying bills (debt) like crazy! However ... we are now in a bit of a OH and pregnant.. yep. We will be second time parents when DD is around 14 months old. We will also be buying our first home. This home happens to be by childhood home (my parents currently rent it out and we will be taking over the deed.) HOWEVER this home has a studio attached with its own entrance and all - that my parents will be staying in! My parents are NEVER really home since they are reeeeeaaally involved in their church community. However it will be a great help with having two tiny little ones and both DH and I working full time. My mom will be taking care of them (when we are back to work.) She is also a mean cook - so something else I probably wont have to worry about much. It may be kind of lame - but I just don't know how else we would do it. I went to college in my home city, so I never had to live in the dorms or anything. By the time I was 20, though, I had just started dating my bf (now husband) and was ready to have my own apartment with him. My brother, who lived and still lives at home with my parents, has a bunch of drug issues, too, so I was at the point where I just had to get out to avoid the drama!! Sometimes I wish I would have stayed because I would have saved myself thousands of dollars in rent, but my sanity was worth more. Edit - so, it's been over 4 years. I'm 24. Honestly, my parents live in the middle of BFE, so moving back home would've meant going back to work at the mine or the truck stop. :/ Not something I was willing to do to save a little money. Twice I stayed with them for a couple weeks (I think 3 weeks was the longer duration of the two) while in between apartments, but that was not a permanent situation. Then after I got engaged, to save money I moved into a townhouse that my parents owned for about 2.5 years, and didn't have to pay rent... That was glorious!!! This helped TREMENDOUSLY through college and my early career. I still think I should've stayed home longer haha, DH doesn't appreciate that sentiment =P I do wish I had taken advantage of the situation a little more, saving more money, etc. Ahh, those were the days!
