@Honeygold89: That is true... I can totally see myself being impatient, and wanting to buy things in case people don't end up getting them! I guess that works as long as your registry is somewhere w/ a good return policy.

@snowjewelz: I only got like 3 things off my registry but it didn't bother me much because I was too impatient to wait on my shower anyway and brought what I knew we would need ahead a time anyways even though it drove DH crazy that I didn't wait but like I told him I wasn't worry because if we had duplicates I would just return and exchange them and in tend end we only had one duplicate item so it all worked out for me

I didn't want it that close because I was too scared that I wouldn't have enough time but it turned out great and I was able to put everything up and finish the little shopping I had left before LO arrived which he came right at 40 weeks on his due date

@LovelyPlum: Not at all! Thanks for sharing! It's great that you came up with ways to turn things around instead of just feeling really upset. I think we are all just so into needing to be "ready" but you are so right; we never are 100% ready and it's not like the baby needs every single thing right away!

I had my big one (family) at 32 weeks. I didn't want it much later than that because I wanted lots of time to pick up the extra stuff we need post-shower, and also because the shower was a few hours away and I didn't know if I'd be comfortable traveling too much later. I had my friends shower at 34 weeks. We also have a shower at my husband's work at 37 weeks, although that is more of a cake and congrats type thing-- I don't expect we'll get very much from that so we're not going to really wait to buy anything until after that.

I had two showers - one at 32 weeks and the other at 37.5 weeks. I appreciated both, of course, but the timing of the earlier shower was a lot better in terms of knowing what else I needed to prepare for my LO. It was hard to scramble to continue to prepare after the shower at 37.5 weeks.

I think mine will be around 34-35 weeks. It would have been earlier but there were complications. We already have the essentials though, so for us it's really about getting together with family and maybe getting some extras. Looks-wise now (29 weeks) would be perfect!

@snowjewelz: I would be lying if I said that I wasn't a little disappointed, too, because I spent hours and hours on that damn thing. Then, of course, I felt like a giant brat, because of course I was grateful that people wanted to participate in celebrating our baby in any way at all. Truly, it was a rough few days.

I dealt with it in a few ways:
1. Exchange some of the duplicates/less useful things we got for things I knew we'd need.

2. Use gift cards for some of the bigger purchases that we didn't get, like our mattress.

3. When people like my FIL, who did not come to the shower, asked what we needed, direct them to one or two pieces of gear that I thought would be very useful and that I had specific opinions about, like our stroller.

4. Prioritize our remaining registry items so as to make our spending money for baby go further. We have a lot we didn't get, but we decided to start with what we knew we would need right away.

5. This was the hardest, but maybe the most important: don't panic! I was so frustrated afterwards, because I didn't see how we would possibly be ready. But two things were true: you don't need everything right away, and it's all just stuff anyways. There is nothing that says I can't continue to add gear after the baby gets here. I was especially worried because I didn't think we'd have that large of a chunk of disposable income to put towards gear right away, but I needn't have worried so much. It doesn't all have to be done at once, and people may surprise you. In the weeks since the shower, several people have asked us what we still needed, and I had a list of things to point them towards. It made life a lot easier!

Mine was in my second trimester, right around 18 weeks. We got pregnant shortly after moving across the country, so my family through us a shower while we were back visiting over Christmas break. It was the only way we'd get to celebrate with any of our friends/family! There weren't a ton of people there (3 days after Christmas) but everyone who was there was really important to us.

But I guess I understand that people are excited and just want to buy what they think is cute for your baby? I want to have disclaimer to ask people to please buy off the registry b/c I spend so much time researching for the products!

I was 34 weeks for ours.

I'm going to be honest-aside from one gift from my parents and an Amazon gift card from my aunt, the shower didn't do all that much to make me feel "ready" for baby to come. People bought nice things, and we will use them eventually, but I spent a good deal of the week after the shower panicking that we weren't ready, because everyone, and I mean *everyone*, went off-registry. It took another few weeks, a few massive Amazon orders, and a few Target trips to feel like we had what we needed for the first few weeks. I'm 39 weeks tomorrow, and I maybe felt like we were ready within the past 10 days or so? That's not even entirely true, because our swing from my MIL isn't here yet, and I still don't have my pump parts.

All that to say, you may or may not feel ready after your shower, and that's OK! I would go with when you feel most comfortable having it time-wise. We traveled for mine, and I wasn't comfortable traveling after 35 weeks. So 34 it was!

I had mine when LO was a couple days shy of a month old. A lot of our family/friends live out of town, and as much as they like me, I knew they'd prefer to make a trip when they could actually meet the baby.
It was more stressful for me, especially since many of the out of town guests stayed at our house so I also had to plan around feeding, cleaning up after and entertaining 8 house guests all weekend, and we had to buy all the gear type stuff ourselves since I wanted everything in place before she arrived, and guests mostly just brought clothes. And at the actual event, me and LO kept having to disappear to feed, which was met with a lot of complaining from some of DH's relatives who thought I kept taking the baby away from them when they're only here for x amount of days, since I wasn't quite comfortable breastfeeding in front of 30 of my not-closest in laws, but it worked well enough.

Mine was at 35 weeks and I thought it was perfect timing. I was big enough to have a cute baby bump, but I wasn't really uncomfortable. It definitely ramped up the excitement for me heading towards having the baby!

As far as having enough time to put things away - my shower was on a Saturday, I was put on bedrest on Monday and delivered the following Saturday. My family pitched in and my mom and sister came to my house while we were in the hospital and set up all of our gifts and baby supplies for us (we already had the crib and dresser, but all of the big toys, diapers, clothes, etc). It was amazing. I guess my point is, you never know what's going to happen but it all works out in the end!
