We went to two places before her first year. One, a very short Caribbean trip/family visit that was relatively easy because she was still taking two naps. I wish we had a bigger hotel room, but that was fine.

Our first trip wasn't necessarily easy but it was to Toronto and Montreal. LO has always been a good traveler. What made that trip hard was the fact that she wasn't sleeping well at night. We actually did a little co-sleeping, which helped. Also she was four months during this trip, so carrier naps were key. For the most part, I'm glad we went.

We've been on other trips since then, but they are much easier in some ways (only one nap) but harder in other ways (active toddler on a flight). I'd rather get away than stay home, so for now we go.

We went to Florida to visit her grandparents a few weeks ago and she is almost 3! Can't imagine us doing it any earlier. It took this long for her to tolerate the car seat for any real length of time and she still won't sleep in one. It actually went pretty well even though she didn't nap at all. Amazed and kind of jealous other people were able to have a good vacation with a little baby!

We've taken 4 trips aside from visiting family and some were fine and some miserable, haha. The 2 good ones were around 5 months and 7 months. The bad ones were 4 months and 9 months -- those both seemed to coincide w sleep regressions

We took loads of tripss. Our first was a three hour road trip to see family when she was 2 weeks old. We've flown around North America and Europe, done loads of driving trips, etc. It's less carefree than before, but still fun.

@Meridian: first trip with lo was when she was four months old and we stayed at my parents house. I didn't do much but we were there to visit family anyway.

We've done more vacation-like trips and activities since lo became a toddler and it's been MUCH more fun! I did not have a sleep anywhere kind of baby, so working around naps has been an issue for us too. But I don't think you're missing out on your chance for a nice trip with lo by waiting a bit.

I answered this earlier but thought I'd go into a lil bit more detail.

First road trip was 1.5 hours up north when DS was 8 weeks. He slept/napped in a pack and play and I nursed him through motn feedings like at home. We were staying At my ILs second home up there so it wasn't too hard and mostly just Visiting family not really vacation.

Next vacation was when ds was 7.5 months, a 3 hour road trip, we timed w Ds' first nap and he slept the entire drive there. His nighttime sleep in a Pnp was a crapshoot and I coslept with him (we don't cosleep at home), but he slept better the second and third night. We'd rented a condo so Dh and I were able to chill, drink, eat, watch movies during sleep and nap times.

Our first real vacation was to Myrtle beach and a 2 hour flight. DS was still nursing so the flights were a breeze. We stayed at a resort and purposely booked a two br condo so that we could hang out during sleep times. And also had a kitchen for us too cook meals and such. DS slept amazingly well and just like at home. We all had a great week!

Since then we've done a wknd in nyc and a week at Hilton head island! DS has always done traveling! The two things we try to always do is fly within a 2.5 hour flight range and book rooms or condos that have two br, so that DH and I can so enjoy time after DS goes down or when he's napping.

It wasn't a vacation- we tried to overnight at a friend's for Christmas when she was 6 months are drove home in the middle of the night in extreme temps and a snowstorm (it was THAT bad). I can't relate when people say babies are easier, that has not in any way been my experience. Up for anything now with my awesome toddler!

We did several 3-4 day trips during her first year, at roughly 10 weeks, 7 months, 8 months, 9 months, 10 months...then we did a week in Spain at almost 12 months. She sleeps exactly the same as at home, like a champ, and is happy to take her naps in the pushchair or the car so it didn't stop us getting out and about. The younger she was the easier it was as she wasn't mobile...we went to London at 9 months and she had a great time! We were sightseeing/seeing friends all day every day and she was so happy to hang out in the ergo. 12 months was the hardest because she wouldn't stay still for a second and it was too hot for her there, really.

We are going away for a week next month at 19 months, so it'll be interesting to see how she does with that trip :)

8 weeks old to Mexico. My ILs rented a condo, so we were there with them and BIL and SIL. I'm sure my husband had fun, but at that point, DS was undiagnosed with reflux and I got food poisoning, so it felt like same same in a different country (albeit much warmer bc it was January).

The next trip was then a long weekend to Philly when he was 10 months old. Much more manageable.

Our first big trip was when DS was 4m and we went to FL. It was ok. He wasn't sttn so I was still tired, just in a different state. We drive a lot that trip and he screamed so much in the car seat that we switched to the convertible when wegot home. On the plus dude he has always been a sleep anywhere baby and was pretty portable. And lots of things are just easier with a non-mobile baby.

Our second big trip was when he was 9m, we went to Cape Cod. That trip was cake. Hardest thing was that he was crawling and the rental house wasn't totally baby friendly. He was still on 2 naps, which I loved. We'd all be up early at 7, do breakfast and play and then nap from 9-11. At 11 we went out for the day to the beach or drove around, went out to lunch, etc. 2nd nap would happen in the car while we were roaming around.

No, I would never willingly take a non mobile baby somewhere where I was trying to have a nice vacation. Waaaaaay too much work. Our first big one was a trip to New Orleans when my daughter was 20 months. We had an absolute blast, I'm sorry she won't remember it.

I went to FL when she was 2 months old and it was WONDERFUL! She was so easy and portable at that age - she slept anywhere (in the car seat, stroller, sling, etc). We went to an amusement park, to the beach, lots of restaurants, walked her all around the boardwalk, even to a movie theater with her in the sling sleeping the whole time. She slept most of the plane rides and the only real trouble was that she had painful gas a few days, but luckily I had gas drops. She would basically sleep, nurse, stare around and smile a bit, rinse and repeat. She was actually way easier at 2 months than any subsequent trips (she's now 21 months)

I asked this not that long ago- I'll copy the link in a minute.

Our first big trip was when c was about 5 months, for Christmas with the inlaws. 5 hour flight and we all stayed in a rental house. Honestly, it was really stressful for me and not that much fun. She wasn't a "sleep anywhere" baby, so while she actually did sleep pretty well, her awake time was only like two hours, and at least half an hour of that was nursing, so I hardly did anything. Mostly I hung out at the house with mil while Dh golfed with his brothers. But I will say c did a lot better than I expected, including sleeping in a pnp in a bathroom at one point during Christmas dinner. :)

We just took an actual family vacation, just the 3 of us, at 19 months, and it was so great! She did really well with the travel, and is actually old enough to understand when I showed her her bed and stuff. She seemed to love all the new adventures and being outside. I am so glad other HBers convinced me to do it! We are actually contemplating another trip this summer before she turns two.

Eta: here is my similar question (but I was asking about a toddler) http://boards.hellobee.com/topic/first-vacation-with-lo#post-2024957

We went to Europe when DS was just under 3 months old. At that point he was still sleeping a lot and would nap in the Ergo. We went to Hawaii when he was 8 months old. Same thing - I would babywear a lot and he would nap when we were out and about. I thought both trips were good timing but some people think I'm nuts!!

12 months and NO. It was terrible. She's a rockstar sleeper at home but was a terror ALL NIGHT LONG in the hotels. We were all zombies during the day and couldn't enjoy our trip. Luckily it wasn't too far and didn't cost is too $.

We just got back from another short trip at 18 months. It was much better - but she is SO busy and we came home exhausted. We did have a lot of fun though.

I'm glad we haven't taken her on a big expensive vacation yet .... I don't think it would be at all relaxing, and I don't think she would get much out of it. Hawaii or the local beach, it's all the same to her at this age, you know ? We are planning to take her to Disney World when she is 3.

12 months and no. It wasn't horrible but it wasn't fun per se and DH has sworn off family vacations until she's like 3 lol i was also about 7 weeks pregnant in the back seat of an 8 hour road trip (we drove there and back) and that skews my view a bit. LO wasn't walking, just crawling and was still on 2 naps a day, one night wake up and needed to be in bed promptly at 7. All things my iLS that went with us didn't understand so I'm sure that contributed to it too. my opinion is the younger the baby, the easier the travel part may be but the less relaxing the rest of the trip would be. I'd love to take her somewhere now at 18 months but we would have to make a lot of stops to make sure she gets her energy out

We took several smaller (weekend) trips when he was under four months old, but took our first longer vacation when he was 4 1/2 months old. For us, we really feel like we have to bring grandparents with us. It works so much better when there is an extra two sets of hands. My ILs came on that trip, and it was a blast. There were, of course, some moments that were hectic, but overall it was definitely worth it. I highly suggest rental houses/condos over hotels- even more so once they become mobile.

We took DD1 on a round the world trip at 5.5 months old, returning home when she was 7 months old. We were visiting family in England for half of it, and did a fair amount of sightseeing. The second half of our trip was to visit family in the US; we didn't do as much sightseeing but were out all the time visiting family and friends. It was easy peasy, even the 29 hour journey back to Australia!

We took a proper holiday when she was 15 months - we went to Bali for a week and it was a ton of fun. She was a great age and we all loved it. We're now planning our next family holiday for May when we're going to the Canary Islands when DD1 will be almost 3 and DD2 will be 15 months.

@Meridian: We were there with you! DS had colic and reflux and needed a rigid schedule and spent like 2 months refusing to eat and requiring hourlong feedings. We did take him to my inlaws for Christmas for two weeks when he was 12 weeks but we hauled a TON of stuff and my ILs couldn't understand why we could never go out for more than an hour. It was a lot of work and not relaxing.

At 4 months we visited my folks and stayed at an Embassy Suites so we could hang out after he was in bed and they had a fridge and everything so keeping his BM and pumping was easy and my parents could babysit and hang out with us in the evenings or babysit for us while we went on a date. That was nice.

Now he's 6.5 months and he's gotten so much for fun since he turned 6 months. He started eating again and bottles take 10 minutes and solids do take some time but he's having fun with it. He's down to two naps and a catnap 50% of the time but he can take that nap in the car or the carrier. We still keep his two naps but he's so much happier and has more personality and is curious about the world. We think it's just going to get better and better. I would totally take him on vacation now, especially if my mom was around to help!

The first trip we took was around 5-6 months, and we drove 2 hours to a condo on the beach. We decided to drive at night around his bedtime. I was exclusively pumping, and he took a bottle every 3 hours. I had a clogged duct that would not go away, and I was stressed beyond belief about not having enough milk for the weekend. Stupid me. I should have bought formula for the trip, but that didn't even cross my mind.

The actual trip was mostly spent inside the condo. Between naps and long feedings, there wasn't much time for us to gather our stuff and head out to spend time on the beach before it was time to nap again. He also didn't enjoy the beach that much. We did get a chance to relax in the evenings when he went down for the night.

As scary as that first trip was, we have taken a lot of trips with a toddler and baby. It's much easier now than it was preparing for that first trip. The first is the scariest, but it does get easier.

I was terrified of travel. We're not big travelers ourselves, so I couldn't picture the logistics of travel with a baby in tow. We didn't go anywhere except family's houses with our first. Even then, one trip at 7 months where he had a stomach bug and was projectile vomiting multiple times a day... we didn't travel again for over a year. Totally traumatizing.

On the other hand, when we had our second some kind of switch flipped and we were like, well, gotta travel. So we took them on a plane for the first time when my first was 3 and my second was 10 months. It wasn't fantastic but wasn't nearly as bad as I had imagined. Then we took them to a wedding and went on another plane trip. That trip actually went pretty well. Those plane rides were about 2.5 hours each. Last year (at ages 2 and almost 5) we went on another plane ride and went on a 3 night cruise, and that went great!

We did our first trips with both kids when they were only 3 months old - they were both completely immobile - couldn't even roll over yet. It was so easy! They slept so much, but they weren't really on any schedule either so it was easy to just take them along wherever we went. Being able to babywear them and nurse (instead of worrying about actual table food) made it nice too.

Ah, this is such a great question! We're in the process of trying to plan our first 'solo' family trip (as in, no other family coming, just hubs, baby and me!) so I'm going to read people's ideas closely!

I will say it has felt more possible because DS just dropped to 2 naps, so it seems easier. Thanks for posing this Q!

When DS was 13 months old we went to Toronto. We had a pretty sucky time. :/ DS wouldn't sleep. The first morning we were there he tripped in the room and busted his head open and we had to take him to the hospital to get it glued. I was 7 months pregnant. We cut the trip a day short because we just were enjoying ourselves that much.

We haven't gone on any vacations with the kids since that one/#2 was born.

We went to a beach town about 3.5 hours from our house when she was 11 weeks old. We had a blast. We brought her down to the beach and propped her up on a boppy underneath a huge beach umbrella. We pushed her around on the promenade, went into shops, out for lunch, etc. We had a blast! It was much easier than when we went the following year, when she was 1 year, 3 months.

First trip with LO was 2 weeks internationally when she was 3.5-4 months. The first 8 days were hell for me at night because she was completely flipped time zones. Even at that young age, she was already very set to her nighttime routine and slept like a champ at night, BUT very very terrible at naps. So my nights were awful. However, in the daytime, she slept well through all the travel in the carrier or car seat or stroller, so I got to enjoy the sights. I was just exhausted the first week and we started our days pretty late. When we weren't sightseeing, I tried to nap whenever she did. I do think travel was easier at a younger age when she would sleep anywhere. But different. I didn't go with any expectations. Just wanted to get used to traveling with a baby and go on a family trip.
