16, with situational exceptions. (My mom ended up dating my then-druggie/alcoholic dad at 15 because her parents had a hard and fast rule. School dance with a family friend, and JUST going to the dance then going home? Nope, still a date, still off limits.) I didn't date until I was 18 - that was screwy.

Moms rule was 16, and will be for our LO's too. I may relax it depending on the situation, but I doubt it!

I had my first boyfriend when I was 14 but we didn't go out on dates until we could drive. Before that we were allowed to go to each other's houses or out with our parents.

I had my first "boyfriend" when I was in sixth grade but I didn't really start dating until I was a freshman in high school. I was 14. My boyfriend was a senior and was 17 so he had a car so we did actually go on dates. My parents did insist on meeting him before he took me out and enforced a curfew but other than that there were really no rules surrounding dating. I really don't get the idea of not allowing your children to date. Having relationships is a wonderful and normal part of life. I started dating pretty early and I went to a very prestigious boarding school and college, have a successful career, and was happily married at the age of 25 to someone I started dating my sophomore year in college (at which point I already had two relationships of over a year so I actually had something to compare to). I can't think of a single way it effected me negatively.

My parents said no dating until college. I would want to enforce the same rule for my daughter. I started dating DH just about right away freshman year of college and it was so distracting and my grades suffered. I think it's better for her to remain focused in high school and concentrate on getting into a good college.

my parents were like yours. i don't know of any policies, but i never had anyone to date, so it never came up. i started dating my first bf at end of senior year. i think that's a good time. i don't think i'd treat girls or boys differently, but i bet my hubby would!

I've always had more guys friends than girl friends, so there were plenty of times I'd go "out" with boys, but they were just friends, nothing more (which my parents knew, so they didn't mind). So, they never made any rules because there wasn't a need to.

I've also never found awkward high school aged boys attractivr so I didn't date until after high school, and once high school was over and I wasn't living under their roof, they couldn't really set rules.

We didn't have a rule about this. I was always boy crazy though, and had a "boyfriend" in grade school! Ha! Like those were actually anything :) I guess I started "dating" when I got to high school.

I don't think DH will let DD date. He says when she is 30, so we'll see ;)

My parents just assumed we wouldn't date til it was time to meet someone we would marry? HAHA I had my first boyfriend at 20.
Not sure when we'll let our kids date. DH will probably tag along on DD's dates until she's 28. jk.

My mom didn't really have to worry about it much, I didn't date until I was in high school. But a lot of my friends dated in middle school and I won't stop my daughter from having a "boyfriend " but I might say only group dates until high school.

I wasn't allowed to date...Ever. LOL. Actually, once I was in university it became okay but my first boyfriend ended up being a total loser. Anyway, when I was in high school boys weren't even allowed to call the house! My parents were overly strict and it made me hide secrets from them. I will be strict with my children but not to the point where they think they need to lie to me.

I don't think there was ever really an age limit. I had a "boyfriend" in 6th grade but we never saw each other outside of school obviously, except for birthday parties. Then I didn't have a boyfriend until DH and I started dating in 11th grade. My parents met him and everything was fine. I had a curfew (11:30), but my parents were never really strict about anything, until they figured out we'd had sex our senior year, but that's another story...

DH and I broke up for 8 months in college and I actually for real dated my 6th grade "boyfriend" for a couple months. Haha it was interesting.

I'm not sure what the rule was because I grew up on a very small island and there wasn't really any dating, you just were or were not together. I think if i had to pick an age, it was 16. I'd prefer to base it not on an age but on my son's maturity level but at the same time I know I'll need to have a rule so probably 16. I would like to think I'd treat a son and daughter the same but I'm not sure.

I wasn't very interested in boys until high school and the same could be said about their feelings for me! Due to that, I didn't have a rule about it. I went to Homecoming and Prom and finally started bringing guys home around 16. That was a rule though, if he wanted to date me, my parents had to meet him first. Even if it was just one date!

My parents never had an official policy, but they did let boys come over when I was a senior in high school (they were friends not boyfriends). I also didn't really date anyone so I guess it wasn't something they had to worry about!

When were you allowed to date? When do you think you'll allow your children to date? Will you treat your son or daughter differently?
