At the time, I knew I would have a new manager four months later, starting in January. That person happened to be visiting our office the prior week, so I told him in person. Then I scheduled a call with the co-CEOs of my company the following Monday, at 13 weeks. (Neither of them work in my office location.) And then I immediately told my actual manager in person.</p> <p>I work for a relatively small company and have a relationship with the co-CEOs, so I wanted to tell them myself.</p> <p>I waited a few more weeks to tell people more broadly, and I didn't make an annoucement. I just told people as it came up. It was a really rough situation because her husband was also laid off within a week or two or her and they are both still out of work because the economy in Alberta has tanked. </p> <p>I'm sure your announcement will go fine by the by, I didn't want to scare you, sorry! If either of those factors had been different I would've waited longer.</p> <p>A girlfriend of mine (who just had her baby this month) came out to her accounting firm at 12 weeks while the oil and gas fall-out was rough here in our neck of Canada- unsurprisingly they laid her off less than a week later in their first round of down-sizing and because she couldn't PROVE being pregnant put her on the block she was SOL and subsequently couldn't find any other employment in the financial sector her entire pregnancy.</p> <p>So in short I think the timing of your announcement needs to account for more than your gestation-I'm not sure about America but Canada is in a recession and I would be hesitant to say anything before I absolutely HAD to.
