I still don't have the hang of covering myself up while doing it, so I'm totally exposed when I am, but once I've got him to latch, I can now do things with one hand while holding onto him with the other, so that's nice!

@Adira: that is wonderful! I never got that super warm fuzzy feeling of tenderness from it, but I really started to love it when I could feed her anywhere without having to plan ahead.

I felt I ought to come and update this in case anyone was curious or someone else experienced something similar and wanted to know how things were going with me. Things are MUCH better! I no longer hate breastfeeding! I think at about 2.5 weeks, the pain was just suddenly gone. Xander latches just fine now and we have no issues. I can't say that I LOVE it, but I definitely don't hate it anymore! Yay!

Thanks to everyone for sharing their experiences and encouragement!

It got better for us between 8-9 weeks, although it wasn't always bad before then. It really was like a light switch. On Wednesday I was calling to make an appointment with another LC and on Thursday things were better and I didn't need an appointment. One of the best things I did was no longer using a nursing pillow. That made things much easier for us because he was old enough to hold his head up better.

With my first, I hated it for the first several weeks and made a goal of "making it" to 1-month... then it got better, so I set a new goal of 3-months... and by 3-months I ended up really LOVING (can you believe I went from hating to loving???) breastfeeding. We ended up breastfeeding for 11-months, and I was a little sad when we weaned.

Now with my 2nd, I am back at the "I hate breastfeeding" phase and constantly have to remind myself that I felt this exact way with my first. I'm trying to focus on "the light at the end of the tunnel". Like others have said... it gets better as you stick it through and you and Xander figure out a rhythm that works for you. He's learning too!! As he grows, a lot of things get better!

It gets better each week at the beginning. Truth be told, at 7.5 months, I still don't really like it, but it's not painful or anything. I just don't like having to stop what I'm doing and sit still, etc. He squirms and pinches. It's just sort of annoying, but it's convenient (no bottles) and I like the nutrition aspect and that he's never really been sick, despite being in daycare. Hang in there! Set small goals to help you along :)

@Adira: the only way I survived the first 8 weeks was using lanolin 24/7. It was insanely painful, worse than labour IMO. It got better though, and we are 9 months strong and still going.

I absolutely hated it for the first 8 weeks. I met with a lactation consultant and she couldn't see anything that was obviously wrong. I think the pain contributed greatly to me not being able to connect to my son, and ppd. I proooomise it does get better. Somewhere around 2 months the pain just went away and I began to love breastfeeding! Just try to hang in there!

I think most people begin to like it around 6 weeks or so when everything regulates. That being said, I have a friend who EBFed her first son for a year, and he second son is 6 months and going, and she hates it. She only BF's because it is nutritionally better but she doesn't enjoy it at all.

Gah! I'm at this point now too where I am needing to see the light at the end of the tunnel. K just had a marathon feeding session and I wanted to cry from the pain through most of it. Six weeks sounds like sooo long at this point. Only good thing is I actually live the closeness and bonding part of bf'ing but my nipples want to go on strike!

The soreness is normal. It would hurt when he first latched for a few seconds and then go away. Things started getting easier for me at 4 weeks. As he gained more head control, it got easier. By 3 months pp I loved BFing. It's so easy now and I'm so happy I stuck with it. Hang in there mama! You're doing great! Give it until 4-6 weeks before deciding to quit.

@Adira: yes! Night time was the worst, so tired, but that little rascal was still hungry. My LC had me use a nipple shield at first, then only at night because it was hardest then. Soon enough you'll be able to get up and do a night feeding without fully waking up! It gets easier with time!

This will make you smile- A friend just said on FB this morning, "I wish my baby monitor had a snooze button."

I absolutely hated it at first. There was no light switch where it instantly got better, it was just gradual. Every week was better than the last (although we would have a few good nurses, then some bad ones back and forth) but every week overall the bad nurses got fewer and fewer.

You can totally do it. It will get better. We are here for you!

I hit the BF glory days at three weeks. But that followed tremendous I'm quitting tomorrow pain and three LC consults. It does get better. The pain is normal in the beginning. I had only ever used my nips recreationally and then all of a sudden they were in the spotlight.

You can do it. I was ready to quit and then just as my nips got used to the abuse her mouth got bigger and was able to latch better. Now I barely feel it when she latches on.

You ladies are sooooo vital to my sanity!!!! Thank you so much!!!!

I think part of my problem is just hormonal. During the day, I feel pretty fine about feeding, and then at night, I become a wreck and cry and want nothing to do with it. I think we also had a few rough sessions last night which made me particularly miserable.

At 8 weeks I realized we had gotten a groove and while I didn't love it, it wasn't the worst thing ever. By 6 months I loved it. Time and bull headed stubbornness got me through. Well, that and a lactation consultant for the first 3 weeks. Take it one feeding at a time, and before you know it the days and weeks will fly by.
