Our 4 month old LO was pretty reliant on the paci for sleeping and even during the daytime to soothe.
I gradually stopped giving it to him during the daytime and only used it at night. But then we got fed up putting it back in in the middle of the night.
We recently started sleep training him using CIO with checks, and would give him his paci to fall asleep but wouldn't put it back in if it fell out. Over the past 10 days, he has stopped using it even to fall asleep.
It was definitely a lifesaver in the first few months but I'm glad he doesn't want it anymore!

We are keeping the paci. I really don't want ds sucking his thumb or fingers. He's at an in-home daycare so there is no limit that he has to stop by. I think we will try to wean by 2. I try not to let him use it too much during the day (he's 9 months now) but he uses it when he's tired or fussy. And he uses it to sleep. Usually we have to get up to put it back in his mouth, but he doesn't usually wake up missing it during the night. Now he's learning to put it in his mouth himself.

@venice4504: Around 6 months of age when my son lost his paci during the night and would cry we'd help him locate it but he figured out ways to get it to his mouth.

We plan to take it away around 1 year of age. He'll have to move up to toddlers at daycare and pacifiers aren't allowed in toddlers so we'll have to wean him off it anyway.

As a preschool teacher, I once had a little boy in my class (3 1/2 years old) who still had his pacifier. His parents let him have it at home, so it was really tough to get him to stop using it at school. He wasn't going to be allowed to have it in the 4 year old class, so one day we told him that his parents didn't bring it (which they agreed to) and after a week he kinda forgot all about having it at naptime.

For those that still use them past the 6 month or so mark, how did you deal with their need for it at night but also them not being able to put it back in themselves? He depends on it (4 months) to fall asleep and it will them fall out (or he'll spit it out) but will wake up and cry and want it back. Any solutions?

If going cold turkey doesn't work, I have heard that cutting off the tip of the pacifier can be quite effective.

RJ used a pacifier for sleep pretty much all day and night when he was an infant, but once he found his fingers, he didn't need it anymore. I can't remember how old he was. He still sucks on his fingers sometimes to fall asleep for naps and during the nighttime, and he's 2. Since he only does it for sleeping time, I don't see the need to break the habit until it becomes a teeth issue.

I probably waited too long because I don't think she needed it anymore but I was kind of scared to do it. We got rid of it at 15 months. I didn't want it to go beyond 18 months for sure. So I took it away cold turkey and she could not have cared less so I was right that she didn't need it anymore.

We got rid of it at 9 months. It was initially used as a sleep aid only, but at 8.5 months I felt like she was getting dependent on it, so I just slowly weaned her off of it over the course of a week or so. She was paci-free by 9 months and I'm glad we did it that early!

I'm just wondering when would be a good age to get rid of my baby's pacifer... Right now, he only has it in his crib at night and naps and in the car. But sometimes he walks around with one he's found in his playpen.

I really really don't want him to have it past 18 months, would it be better to take it away when he turns 1 or leave it til he's 18 months?

As an aside, it drives me crazy when I see 2.5-3 year olds (and up) with pacifers. If your child can take it out of their mouths and have a conversation with me, get rid of the pacifer!!!
