We don't keep soda at home. I don't drink it, period. Sometimes my husband orders a diet coke. I'm not too worried about our kid getting exposed to soda at a young age because opportunities will be sparse at best.

I don't get why a sip of all-natural or cane sugar soda is so much worse and more taboo than a bite of cake or pie or ice cream? They are all sugary and none of them are technically good for you but what's the harm as a treat every once in a while? Obviously I get the high fructose corn syrup (gross) and aspartame (gross) concerns, but as far as giving tastes of things to kids, isn't sugar is sugar is sugar?

For example, we dont drink soda. But recently, we had root beer floats at a get-together at our house. We bought this delicious all-natural root beer made with cane sugar and ginger to make the floats. Why is giving LO a taste of that worse than giving a taste of ice cream?

People say they don't want LO to have a sip of soda til she's 10, but will give her cake on her first birthday. I don't get it.

We have a soda stream, my husband uses it mainly for carbonated water and coke zero, so we do have it in the house.

It's like everything else, if he wants to taste it, I will let him try it. The more I try to withhold things, the more he seems to want them.

my only rule with the grandparents is "please, you can give her anything you want to eat but soda". I just want to avoid it as long as possible. At home we do drink sparkling water and sometimes my 2 yro will have a sip of that. We were at a speciality cafe a few months ago and I got one of their house made fruit sodas (very mild) and I did let her have a sip of that vanilla soda. Though let her is used loosely as she got to it before I could stop it.

I just don't worry about this much because we don't keep it in the house. He hasn't yet had it at almost 15 months and I know I won't be the one who offers but tiny bits here or there, as he is older at occasions outside our home seem like no big deal.

Hmm...maybe sips at 3 or 4? Whenever he's old enough to ask for it. We don't keep it in the house and rarely order it out, but I'm sure it'll come into his life somehow. I was raised in a house with very little junk food and my parents were rather preachy about bad foods, but I think it backfired because my sister and I went crazy when we went to friends' houses and college. I want to raise my kids with a more balanced attitude towards food - all things in moderation etc.

Ha. Pretty much never. We don't drink pop at all. It's nasty to us and sooo bad for us!

We know he'll be given it at parties and whatnot so I try not to fret but I hope to raise him with the knowledge of how bad it is! Ice cream once in awhile I'm okay with but pop is so nasty to me!

I was getting her out of the car & had a take out soda in my hand... while I was closing the door she leaned over & took a sip! Little stinker!

@Lindsay05: Yes! I've been with my parents for 10 days and they do so much that drives me crazy! My mom had been preparing meats for the grill (and was a few 7&7s deep) and STUCK HER FINGER IN H'S MOUTH to see if she could feel for teeth! I almost died and I bit her head off. She swore she washed her hands but I don't know...They drive me nuts with her!

I don't know when I will let my LO have soda. It doesn't concern me too much. We rarely had soda in our house growing up and rarely have it now. A couple sips of soda at a young age at a party doesn't concern me. Daily healthy habits are most important.

I agree with @sarac: I want my kids to have healthy relationships with food and drinks, so I don't want to "fetishize" junk food. Soda isn't for daily drinking, but it's nice to enjoy one once awhile without guilt. I don't want my kids to feel the need to binge on soda when I'm not around because they're for forbidden to have it at home.

I refuse to fetishize soda and candy and all of these 'bad' things. So, when we eat them, she (23 months) is allowed to try a bite. We just don't keep them in the house, don't order them in restaurants, don't really hang out with people who consume them much. She's very rarely exposed to them. But when she is, she's been allowed to taste. I don't want to make them a forbidden, coveted thing. There's nothing at this point that she isn't allowed to try - we just don't serve her the bad stuff.

Probably not until 5 or 6 and it will only be at special occasions like birthday parties. I don't want my kid to be the odd one out but a small glass is fine now and then. We rarely have it in our house so it will not be an option. It's just like everything else, they need to be exposed but know the dangers and consequences of the stuff.

As long as I can put it off. We went to Qdoba today and got him his own kid's meal (a cheese quesadilla and side of pinto beans) and were offered a choice of juice, soda or milk (nope, nope, and has no interest).

We almost never have it at the house (it's one of the things I love that I mostly gave up in a quest to get fit) so when he gets it it'll be at a party or something.

Not at home. Probably special occasions after 3. I know they don't need it, but I've met plenty a whiny 3 yo who wanted what everyone else was drinking. And there aren't so many special occasions that I'm going to worry about it.
