I hope that any kind of social media involvement won't happen until 8th or 9th grade. So 14? And I will be monitoring all of that activity!

@Honeybee: We're going to be out of the loop and not even know how to get onto it. We'll be sure that it's all about sex, drugs and rock n roll. The kids will roll their eyes at us about how "square" we are... (and for that matter for using the word "square"). They'll all secretly sneak onto it on their phones and other mobile devices. And those of us who won't allow mobile devices will be especially hated and equated with those parents of our era who wouldn't let us wear make up or date until college.

Awesome! I'm looking forward to it!

Whatever social media site is the rage at that point, she can have an account. But I will have all log-in information and she shouldn't plan on posting anything that she doesn't want me to see. I don't plan on ever logging in and checking up on her, but if she knows I can log in at anytime, hopefully that will encourage her to behave.

My niece is 12 and all of her friends have had one for at least a year. My SIL refuses to let her have one until she's 14 though. I think she's mature enough to have one now (and she has a twitter and IG already) but obviously I'm not her mom.

As for DS we're just going to wait and see what's around when he hits his pre-teens.

my niece has one and she's only 8 (maybe 9 now?)!! I don't get it! She just posts really silly things and "friends" anyone and everyone, it doesn't matter who they are. It seems like it would be SO easy for a sexual predator to get information out of someone so young.

I personally would rather my kids not have one at all....like others have said, it will have probably gone by the wayside by then, only to replaced by a new, more intrusive form of social media.

I am not a fan of social media in general...FB was useful for keeping up with family and sharing pictures when I live abroad, but TBH I don't really have much use for it now. I should probably just bite the bullet and shut it down alltogether.

I don't think I would mind her having one when she asks for it (assuming she's a pretty good kid).
If she's really young (before high school?), I will require that I have all the log-in info so I can check messages and anything else should I desire. I think once she gets older (sometime in high school?), I would give up the log-in info, but she would have to be friends with me, and not allowed to hide posts from me.
My parents restricted 'popular' things from me, and it really bothered me. I was such a good kid, and suffered needlessly from their strict rules.
As long as she's honest, respectful and not being inappropriate, I think I'll give her a pretty long leash

Definitely not before 13. My 11 year old cousin has one and it bothers me. Of course, he also has an iPhone that he does whatever he wants on it without any sort of supervision. This is the same child that called me a "shithead" last weekend....

ANYWAY, it is scary to think about. I hope to do the best I can teaching my children about the Internet and how to treat others in general. However, I don't think a middle schooler has any business being on fb at all.

@littlebittyhouse: agree.

Bullying and inappropriate pics are my biggest concerns. I don't think highschookers completely grasp the ramifications of posting certain things as they attempt to enter college and the workforce.

Stuff in cyberspace can follow or haunt people for a long time to come. You hear about some of these tween and teen suicides and the parents say the kids were even bullied on FB. Why did they have a FB account? At some point kids need a rest from things going on at school.

Whatever social media is the hit at that time, I say 13 is the youngest I would let my kid have one.

I started using the internet heavily around 11, although all I did was search for Sailor Moon pictures lol. Way before the days of social media. When I was 12/13 I started going on Yahoo chat though and met my first online friends. I did find a lot of creepos on there too, but even at that age I found them really easy to just ignore.

I had my first email account when I was like 9.

I think high school. High school for most things. But, children need to be educated on what is appropriate to put on the internet and what isn't. I can't believe what high school kids put on their facebook pages.

@regberadaisy: UGH and then I'd have to worry about girls flashing my boy via video! Fun! NOT!

DH and I talk about this all the time. We will not be letting him have a laptop in his room or cell phone with texting. Too much temptation and peer pressure. I know it seems strict but how else can you monitor? And really - what does a 14 yr old have to be texting about...

Well I think the age limit on FB is like 14, so 14. Of course, in 14 years things will be much different, so who knows! That being said, any social media at all she WILL be friends with me, with the exception of blogging/journaling, because I have no problem with her having a private diary like I did as a teenager. I think it's dangerous for young kids to be exposed on the internet at such a young age, and I hope to teach her that having a looooong internet history is just not a good idea.

Def not before 13 but I think that having an FB in middle school is still innappropriate. I still dont' love the idea of having one in High School but I get that it is what kids do now.

What scres me is the sexual content, bullying, rumors. I hope to raise my child to treat others how he would like to be treated but I htink that social media makes that very very hard.

I think 13 for me and the requirements will be we have to be friends.

My niece is 9 and her same age cousin has a FB account as do many of her friends. I just think it's ridiculous! Why does a 9 year old need a FB account?
Like any kid she bothers my SIL sometimes about why she can't have a FB account too. I'm glad my SIL is standing her ground on this one. I personally feel 9 is WAY too young!

Hopefully if FB sticks around that long they'll have an option of creating a parental control account for young teens.
