We currently don't live in an area where anyone would go door to door TOT & we will probably be here for the long term so never? Lol there would have to be some parent present to take even a group to & from a TOT safe neighborhood. I think this is the last year the older one will be doing TOT--then I think she'll be dressing up to hand out candy to the littles. I never went trick-or-treating by myself and I can't really imagine letting my kids go (and by the time I think they're old enough to go alone, they're probably too old to trick-or-treat). I can imagine going someplace that does trick-or-treating and let them roam about on their own, if it was at a park or a school or something very supervised. But alone? We live in a safe, suburban neighborhood and I wouldn't be too worried about anything happening. Unless she's going with friends and there's an older teen. Our subdivision gets crazy busy. And lots of older kids (shadier looking older kids) come in from other neighborhoods, causing trouble. Although I guess I didn't live in a walkable community so my parents had to drive me. We do live in a community that does trick or treat but even when they were older I think that would freak me out. What better night to nab a kid than when all the kids are out running around (often without parents) and talking to strangers. Maybe I'll just trail half a block behind at some point so she can feel "alone" but yea.. no. I went until 6th grade but most houses told me I was too big (thanks puberty). I went again in 7th & 8th to help my friend take a group of her siblings. No parents. I think i went door to door girl scout cookie selling before then though! Maybe like 5th/6th grade? I remember going out with my friends at that point. I went trick or treating until like high school though. I don't believe in being "too old"! And I lived in a super safe suburban neighborhood. I would probably let lo go door to door on his own within my line of sight in maybe kindergrten/ first grade (assuming I could trust him to have good manners and say thank you without being reminded....) but completely solo? On our street maybe 6th grade? But it will depend on a lot of factors. Who knows how things will change by then. Must be pretty safe out there in Bear Country! Although I remember trick or treating without my parents when I was in third or fourth grade; we just went with a big group of older kids.
