@lemondrop: we have gotten a lot of use from our Strider balance bike! My oldest just used it last fall as I mentioned above but my younger son has used it all this year (at age 2-3) and they love being able to ride bikes together. I don't think I could have found a pedal bike small enough for a 2 year old so the Strider has worked out great.

@mrbee: Well now I'm kicking myself for buying the Strider bike last week! For the same price I could have just done that :silly: Oh well, little brother will end up benefiting from the Strider as well.

We bought my DS a bike with no training wheels this summer, and he learned to ride it in 3 days. He was around 4.5.

@BabyBoecksMom: @mrbee: we just did this! Lowered the seat and removed the pedals. She's ridden maybe 6 times and tonight with a tiny bit of downhill she was balancing (no feet) for several yards. She even hit some bumps and swerved a bit and was able to recover. I think she's totally ready now because she complains about not going fast enough on the uphill now. She just turned 4.

@mrbee: yes! I highly recommend this, we bought a strider balance bike last fall for my then almost 4 year old. This spring he was able to ride a 2 wheel bike with pedals (no training wheels) the very first time he tried! I was amazed!

@looch: Yah exactly! There is a non profit around here that teaches kids to ride bikes and that's how they do it!! Takes about an hour and then they put the pedals back on.

Sorta related example...
http://prairiedaze.com/2010/05/25/look-ma-no-pedals/

@mrbee: Hold the phone...take off the training wheels, obviously, but also the pedals? Make it like a balance bike, and then put the pedals back on?

My son doesn't ride his bike often enough to get comfortable. It is like everytime on is the first time.

I taught my little brother to ride without training wheels when he was 3. Give it a try. E is nowhere ready yet, he's still working on pedaling well.

I've heard you can take off the training wheels and also take off the pedals! Then your kid can learn how to maintain balance... and once they've figured that out, then you add the wheels.

At least, that's how they teach kids to bike ride at the block parties here!

We're not there yet but I'll probably take them off whenever LO requests or I notice that he doesn't need them anymore.

Take em off! Worst case scenario, she hates it without them and you put them back on

My daughter saw the neighbor's son learning to ride his bike without training wheels... so naturally, she has decided she no longer wants them. Every time we try to get her on her bike, she throws a fit because we haven't taken them off. (ha!)

She's in gymnastics and has incredible balance. I'm almost wondering if we should just go ahead and take them off and see how she does. She's almost 4.

When will/did you take the training wheels off?
