Knowing me, I would definitely do it because I'd LOVE to share the gender with my family. :)

My first u/s was at 17 weeks and the tech said she didn't think she would be able to tell the gender that early, that it was better at 20 weeks, HOWEVER she was able to tell the gender (it was clear he was a boy. I even knew it WAY before she got to that part of the u/s) and at our 20 week u/s DS was not behaving with the tech and she could not tell.

If we hadn't asked at the first u/s we wouldn't have known at our 20 week anyway. I think it just depends on the techs patients level and how cooperative your baby is for success.

I had our initial anatomy scan at 18 weeks and they were able to tell us the sex then (and it was VERY clear it was a boy). I agree with G. Sassy, if by that point you can't tell, it's because the baby is being uncooperative.

I went in for an ultrascan at 13 weeks and we found out then. Our tech said she was 95% certain he was a boy....and she was right!

I had mine done at 18 weeks. She was wonderfully cooperative, and it was very clear that there were no boy parts :) I don't really think 2 weeks will matter that much. I have had friends that have had several ultrasounds in a row because their babies weren't in a great position to get measurements, etc... it didn't seem to matter which week they were in. If baby is uncooperative, s/he's uncooperative.

My anatomy scan was at 18 w, 5 days (because that is when my doctor's office schedules them...) and we saw it was unquestionably a boy. We had another ultrasound later b/c of an issue, and they confirmed again boy :)

I would wait. Because my hospital scheduled my first anatomy scan at 19 weeks and the baby wasnt very cooperative but at 22 weeks when i went back it was huge difference in how clear everything was on the screen and the baby was in a better position. In your case I would wait till 20 weeks.

We were able to see the gender on our anatomy scan at 17w1d. I would go for 18 weeks so you can tell your family :)

I would wait. I was paranoid enough that they were wrong at 20,I would be even more paranoid if it were earlier.

My doctor was able to us the gender at 16 weeks, but we did not get an anatomy scan until 20 weeks. At 20 weeks the baby has developed enough that the docs are more likely to catch any possible issues or abnormalities, as @Msmini said...

I would wait, because every week you are closer to 20 weeks increases not only the chance to see the gender, but increases the odds that you will get a good enough scan to catch any development issues that could come up. That being said, I didn't want to know the sex, so I made sure to schedule mine at 20 weeks because I wanted the scan to be as thorough and accurate at catching issues as possible.

It's not really going to be an issue for a few months yet, but I like to plan ahead. :) My husband and I are going to visit our families from 19 weeks to 20 weeks.

I am paying out of pocket for my ultrasounds and will request an anatomy check. It'd be nice to be able to tell everyone the gender when we see them (they live halfway/all the way across the country, so it's not exactly like we visit often.) I also don't want more ultrasounds than I need (both physically and monetarily.)

So... Am I significantly less likely to see the gender at 18 weeks than 20?
