@stargal: I am desperate for sleep. But I also I worried that I know longer "know" my son and what's right for him. Not that anyone else knows him better but he seems different for some reason.

We're non-CIO, but not for the "can't hear her cry" factor. We just don't agree with it. With G I did CIO & was fine for 45 minutes (what it *took* the first night of sleep training).

@pastemoo: yea I hear ya! Honestly o think my son would just cry and cry if I let him. Honestly if he was a terrible sleeper I would prob be more open to CIO if I was desperate for sleep.

The first night of CIO Elliot cried for an hour and 3 minutes before he fell asleep. If that had happened for multiple nights I probably would have quit. Luckily he only cried 18 minutes night 2 and 3 minutes night 3!

Depends on the cry. We set a 15 minute time limit. He got more pissed off when we checked on him at 5, 10, 15 minute intervals, so we would let him cry for up to 15 minutes at a time. If he was hysterically screaming at 15 minutes I'd go in and rock/nurse him. If he was only lightly crying--a tired, but fighting sleep cry--I'd let him go up to 20 minutes. On the flip side, if he was really super hysterical I might go in sooner, but not before 10. He's only cried longer than 15 minutes a handful of times, and he's usually been wet. Most nights he's asleep in 5-10 with maybe 2-3 minutes of light crying.

My feeling is...you know your baby, and you know yourself. He took to it really easily....as I said, it was rare that it was more than 10. I don't think I could have handled it for 20, 30, 40+ minutes.

**I did CIO around 4 months and it worked amazingly and he never cried more than 30 minutes so I was able to use CIO at that point because I could stomach it. I don't think I could stomach hours and hours.

Ds honestly doesn't cry very much. If he is crying, something is usually wrong. I'd give it about 15 mins before getting him. I used to let him CIO a little longer but felt like it was pointless.

It depends. If he is doing his "I hurt" cry then not a second. If he is just fussing and I know of his needs are met and there is nothing else to do, then awhile.

With my daughter, and first born, I couldn't do CIO. But, she was a horrible sleeper until we did it and 18 months old. With my son, who just turned 13 months old, we did CIO at 5.5 months old and he sleeps better than my three year old!!!

Believe me, it SUCKS listening to them cry. But, when I know there is nothing I can do to stop it, then it is a little easier. And, sleeping in my arms is not an option when I have to chase the three year old around all day....

@stargal: :) I totally understand! Nothing is working for us... and I know a couple nights ago he cried in the night for over 2 hours (not even doing CIO--I was holding him, nursing, rocking etc!) and I was just curious.

I know that many many CIO trainings are super awful on night 1 and then get much better... so I wondered what the cutoff point would be for parents to decide CIO was not for their baby.

Around ten min. I'm a wuss! I can't stand to hear him cry. CIO doesn't work for us but that's OK :). I think CIO is fine for those who use it though!

I don't know what I can stomach of my son crying but I'm curious what others could.
