@yellowbird: definitely won't be allowed to bring the baby to work. I might could get them to let me work from home for a couple weeks, but that's best case scenario.

@Mrs. Blue: I would say definitely try for 8 weeks yo get breastfeeding established or try to see of you can bring baby with you to work for a time period so breastfeeding will be easier.

@bhbee: It's a pretty self-contained job, so I could do it without phone calls, etc. It's the kind of job you could do 95% of from home if it wasn't in a traditional field that isn't prone to allowing that.

what's your childcare situation going to be if you work at home? I think that's a big factor. I started back part-time (at home, no childcare) at 4 months and I found it challenging to work around the lack of nap schedule, which would be worse at 6 weeks. probably depends also on what type of work it is . . . can you pick up the hours in the evening if the daytime at home hours don't work, or do you need to be able to get on the phone, etc. that said people have always been ok with it when I'm jiggling a fussy baby/toddler during a conference call!

I'm at six weeks now and wouldn't mind part time or from home work.

I'm just now going back part-time at 6 months, but I'm a grad student so it's a little different! For my fellowship/stipend I have to work for my department as a TA part-time but I can control the hours I work on my dissertation since no one is counting on me

I would say about 8-10 weeks too. 6 weeks was the worst for me both times. There's a huge growth spurt at that time so nonstop feeds round the clock and major fussiness.

I think somewhere in the 8-10 week range would be awesome. 6 weeks would be doable (but not ideal) as a second time mom.

I went back to work (full time) after 10 weeks with my first, and I felt like it was WAY too soon. Part time would have been a little easier, I think.
However, I also think (hope) that things will be easier as a second time mom! Breastfeeding and pumping were both completely overwhelming last time and I think I'm going into it more informed and confident the second time. Does that make sense?

I applied for a part-time job, and the person I would be interviewing with knows that I'm due in January. He said that wasn't a problem, but said he would want to talk in an interview about how long I thought I would need to be off because it's a very small office, etc. The job is only half-time, so I'm just trying to figure out when would be best to say I would go back. I think there's a chance I could go back for even less hours and work from home for part of my hours, but I'm not sure about that.

I had a long maternity leave (14 weeks) with E & F, and I know I wouldn't be able to take that long off. I also know that I would be technically entitled to 12 weeks of FMLA (I've worked for the same employer, but a different job, long enough to meet the requirements), but I wouldn't really feel good about doing that in this situation. I didn't have a lot of BFing success last time, so I do want to make sure I have time to try and get that really established.

So, if you were returning to a part-time job, how long would you request to be completely off? I'm thinking of saying I need 6 weeks off completely, and then would be open to coming back to regular hours, but maybe working a few from home for another couple of weeks.
