@MamaG: That's a really good point! Luckily we're in a major metropolitan city so it's at least better than having to go to a remote village!

@misolee: Thanks! Really good tips. I'm only half way through pregnancy and I'm already going OCD trying to plan this out lol! I think it's b/c I want to see if I should register for any travel specific items.

I'm inclined to say option #1, but the only worry I would have would be travelling internationally and potential illnesses. I would probably check with a pediatrician from a vaccine perspective.

#1 for sure - as soon as they start crawling around it's all they want to do, which is a nightmare on an airplane! I would still consider buying a seat for her though, depending on how she sleeps best - some babies fall asleep easily being worn, but L never did. He slept awesome in his car seat though, so taking it on the plane with us would for sure be the easiest way to travel.

@snowjewelz

The ergo is a lifesaver. For long flights, we were able to walk around with LO in the ergo and she slept well. We went to Korea, and they are baby friendly at malls and other childrens places. We just took her in the ergo on public transportation and then borrowed strollers at the malls, etc. It worked well.

For like long walks or places we went with in a car, we had a travel compact stroller. Again, lightweight so it's not too heavy to carry around but essential bc LO would sleep in the stroller. Especially bc of the time difference.

We also took a pack and play only bc LO only sleeps in her crib at home. She had never slept on the floor or with us, so we were afraid she wouldn't sleep without a crib. This def can be taken out if your LO can fall asleep with u guys on the bed.

soooo much easier the younger they are. We took my LO on about 5 airplane trips her first year. Everything went smoothly. After that, we have had one trip from hell after another. Toddlers are a whole new ball game!

option 1 for sure!! It gets so much harder to travel as they get older and more mobile. Under 6 months is so much easier. You don't have to worry about food/solids, nap schedules are more flexible/they can nap on the go, air travel is easier, etc.

Option 1 for sure. I traveled when LO was 2 months and it was a breeze. Brought my ring sling for him the plane and it was SO nice. I couldn't imagine trying to contains wiggly one year old on a plane. Yuck.

@misolee: That's great! Thanks for the details!

@irene: So true about the variables as they get older. And thanks for letting me know about the airline seats. I almost want to buy her a seat tho so we can have more room ourselves... Since buying 3 economy tickets is still cheaper than buying 2 business class!

option 1! The older she gets the more difficult it is. I didn't believe it before. Now I do.

We traveled with LO to Australia (from US) when he was 5 months. Whenever he cried on the plane I shoved him the boob. Then even if he jet lagged I would still resolve it with shoving him the boob lol. Jetlag wasn't too big of a deal when I was used to getting up 2 times a night anyway even at home. 5 months was a sweet age to travel. LO didn't sleep all the time back then. And he played with a friend's same age baby! It was so nice. Not to mention you don't have to worry about solids because you don't need to feed them solids before 6 months.

option 2 is doable, but there are a lot more variables (especially you can no longer shove him the boob to quiet him down lol). Like how well he does on a long flight, how well he does on adjusting to jet lag...etc. It also highly depend on your LO's personality which you haven't met yet.

ETA: Actually I believe you don't need to buy a seat for them until after 2 years old. Some of the trips we bought a seat for LO anyway though.

Option 1 - your LO will be a little more portable at that age and you won't have to worry as much about snacks, entertainment, mobility, etc.

While we've found it way easier to travel as LO gets older (he's almost 2.5 now and a great traveller), we've never flown overseas and our longest flight has been 5 hours although we have had 13-hour travel days.

option 1. at both those ages, LO will not remember the trip. so the benefits of option 1 for international travel far outweigh any perks of being in a new city with a toddler!

I traveled to Asia with my LO at 10 months before she was walking and it was completely fine (14 hours). I did not have to purchase a ticket for her but she had to pay 10% of a ticket. I was breastfeeding her for take off and to go to sleep for naps. She was eating solids so she loved eating snacks, fruits, and string cheese I packed for her with some ice packs. You can also request a bassinet which I put her down to sleep in...and it's extra leg room bonus! Sometimes, when we weren't using the bassinet, the flight attendants let LO play on the floor (i put a blanket) and she had a ball.

Another thing - somewhere around 1 (a couple months before, a couple months after) they start to get a little more scared of people - at least in my experience. Your family might have a better chance of being able to hold her/play with her while she's younger? L went through her stranger-aversion starting at 14 months, so she still would have been fine before 1, but I think it gets riskier as they get older?

But, there are also babies that will not let other people hold them, so who knows... haha

Between your 2 options, definitely option 1!

If I were to pick an absolute ideal time it would be between 4 months up until crawling. For us, that was around 8 months.

They are still pretty fun when they are under 1. Our LO was smiling at everyone and cooing/babbling when we brought her to meet her grandparents in Europe at 7-8 months.

DEFINITELY before 6 months! As soon as L became mobile she wanted nothing to do with being held. Also, feeding from 9 months - 15 months in public/away from home was stressful because it was messy (purees, solid foods, whatevs!).

Absolutely option one. They are SO much easier to travel with when they are younger. And actually even though an infant eats more often if you plan to breastfeed it's super convenient. With a 1 year old you have to worry about finding them solid food that they will eat.

I'm due at the end of Nov, and I have 2 options to travel with her back to Asia in 2015...

Feel free to add to my pros/cons list!

1 - Before June [she will be under 6 months]
Pros
* Relatives in Asia get to see her sooner
* Not too active or mobile, don't need to entertain her much
* Don't need to buy her a ticket
Cons
* I will need to feed her all the time and we're probably out a lot
* She will sleep a lot and it's boring for people?

2 - After Sept [she will be almost a year]
Pro
* More fun to interact with people
* Sleep/eat less frequently than option 1...?
Con
* Need to buy her a ticket
* Demand more attention/entertainment

I just really cannot travel with her during the summer due to the summer heat and mostly my work schedule.
