As a nanny, I would say it can't hurt to start looking earlier, but around a month or two is probably the sweet spot. When I look for a new nanny position due to a position ending or an upcoming move, I try to start looking about 2 months in advance.

I would start putting feelers out in late May/early June and then get more serious about it in July. I nannied in your area when I was in college, just part time, but July seemed like a popular time for people to be lining things up for the school year.

@winniebee: I agree that a couple months out is probably the best time to start looking, otherwise you risk finding nannies you'd like to hire who won't be willing or able to wait for a few months (or more) before beginning. Also on my local mom board, the start of the school year does seem to be the best time to find a nanny.

@Cole: That's what I was thinking. What is working in my favor is (I think) I'll be looking for the start of the school year and I'm guessing that will match up with end of summer gigs as well as nannies getting laid off due to kids starting school.

I would try in late May but don't be shocked if it fails. When I was a nanny I found that 4-6 weeks out was the sweet spot, except for jobs starting either at the start of summer or end of summer in which case people planned a bit further out. I met soooo many people though who tried to find someone in advance and had the person bail because they needed work sooner or they were offered a better gig. If you can swing some flexibility with the start date you may have better luck.

We are going to be looking for a new nanny for the fall (probably mid September). We'll want roughly 30 hours a week, primarily to watch a 3 month old while I work and then to also pick up the toddler from school and be home to catch our oldest from the bus. She'd be in charge of all 3 for around 1.5 hours each day.

When would you start looking for a nanny? Wait until the summer? Or sooner?
