@lovelife: oh, I second the saline drops. They make such a difference and she didn't seem to mind nearly as much as the nose bulb

Hope your doctor visit goes well and your LO gets to feeling better

I've never taken LO since there's nothing they can do for a cold. If they have a fever or an unusual cough (like barking or other really bad sounds), then I would at least call for an opinion.

we've never taken charlie in for a cold. we did take him in twice because he had a wheezing cough, and it turned out to be a respiratory virus. the highest his fever has gotten up to was 102 maybe 103? and we've never taken him in for that either.

When lo has a cold we called and they gave us suggestions on what to do, like use the humidifier and saline drops. They said to watch for a fever and if it gets too high or if she stops eating take her in.

I only take Wagon Jr. in if I think he needs a prescription or he's had a high fever for more than a couple of days. This is mostly because he ends up getting sicker from all the germs in the doc's office, no matter how much we Purell!

But as a new mom I did call a lot when we had the first cold, the first fever, etc. Our nurse's line is GREAT and will call you back 24 hours a day, so a lot of times it was great peace of mind to talk to a nurse and get their opinion on whether or not you should take them in.

For a cold, no. Even though it's really hard to see them like that, there isn't much the doctor can do.

My LO had an awful cold last week, so I had her sleeping on an incline, had the humidifier going everytime she was sleeping, and put some Vicks on a washcloth and kept it near her head when she was sleeping to help break up the cough (she's too young to put it on her).

I hope your LO feels better really soon!!

^ also, there is no cold medication for children under the age of 2.

When LO was about 4 months old, I thought she had a cold and the only thing the doctor told me to do was to use a few drops of eucalyptus oil in her bath, Vicks vapo-rub, etc.

So, unless there was a high fever, I wouldn't take her to the doctor.

We have horrible health care (free, but horrible) so I never take her in. They say unless the baby has fever for more than 72 hours it's not an emergency. So I just give her tempra, or tynelol. and wait it out.

I finally gave in and called today to talk to a nurse.. (waiting for a call back) Lo has had a runny nose, coughing (mostly at night) and she was sneezing a lot but that has backed off. As a new mom I never know when its the right time to take her in.
