@T.H.O.U.: that's what I meant... CP (chemical preg) is before ultrasound is able to confirm gest. sac :)

@runnerd: @pui: You can have an ultrasound done whenever. Some get them at 4 weeks, some not until 12, that doesn't factor but try this definition:

http://miscarriage.about.com/od/onetimemiscarriages/p/chemicalpreg.htm

What Chemical Pregnancy Means:

The term chemical pregnancy means that the miscarriage happened at a point that a missed period and biochemical tests, such as an hCG blood test or a home pregnancy test (checking hCG in urine), were the only evidence that you were pregnant. The miscarriage happened before an ultrasound could have shown a gestational sac.

When the pregnancy develops to the point that ultrasound could confirm the existence of the pregnancy, the term becomes clinical pregnancy. Thus, a chemical pregnancy would be a miscarriage before the fifth week of gestation -- or within about week after your missed menstrual period.

Countdown to Pregnancy has good stats on getting BFPs by DPO. Based on what it says, I always tell myself that I'll wait until 12dpo.

@NorCalWayfarer: I didn't think that counted as a chemical pregnancy. I thought that only referred to pregnancies discovered before the day of your expected period and anything after that is considered a miscarriage...

@LizSmith: sorry for your loss.

@pui: @MrsMcD: Last month I got a BFP on 12 DPO (LP is generally 14 days) and still got a BFP on 14 DPO but then had a "chemical pregnancy" a week later at 5w -- so basically my period was a week late. Unless I hadn't tested til waaaay late (21DPO or later), discovering the CP would have been unavoidable. I'm still going to test at around 12-14DPO next time. Sadly the chemical pregnancy is just something I've had to deal with. But it definitely makes testing even scarier than before. :-(

12 dpo sounds like a good day to test, but from what I've read OPKs are not more sensitive than HPTs...you'd get a positive on any decent HPT well before you'd get a positive OPK.

The earliest I've tested is 10DPO. I almost always test on a weekend though so sometimes it's later. Ideally, 12DPO since my LP isn't any longer than that.

And I'm totally curious as to why anyone would want to use an OPK as a HPT?

Personally, I wouldn't want to know if I had a chemical pregnancy. I would rather remain ignorant and assume any bleeding is just my period. That is why I would always wait until at least the day of my expected period to test.

I go with the day before my expected period. I too had a m/c and seeing blood gives me the same feeling, so I understand wanting to test early

I wouldn't use OPK's as pregnancy tests though, they are unreliable.

Everything I've read says OPKs are not more sensitive than HPTs. They only pick it up well after an HPT would. If you want sensitive, I'd get some wondfos from Amazon.

Personally I always liked testing early because the wondering what if was worse than the negative. Also, I experienced a CP which didn't show up until 15DPO on HPTs (and late implantation can sign that the pregnancy won't stick) so I much preferred to know earlier. If you want a realistic start time, 12DPO is fine. You could even go 10DPO, which is when I got my +. Personally I would never wait around for AF, but I'm just way too type A.

I'd say 12dpo is a safe time to test if your LP is usually 14 days or so. I don't know the exact stat, but more than 50% of positives are reported (on FF) on 12dpo.

As for OPKs, I wouldn't use them as HPTs. I think you always have some level of LH in your system, so you could get a false "positive"

I think for a lot of us ttc, the consensus is that AF's arrival is less upsetting than a BFN. I was totally there, but since my m/c I feel the opposite. Since bleeding was my first sign something was wrong, seeing blood on the tp when I'm still hoping to be pregnant just brings back bad memories. That being said, I don't really like negatives either. So when do you think, assuming a normal cycle, is the best day to test to have a lower chance of a false negative, but still before AF is likely to show so I have some warning that it's definitely coming? Maybe 12dpo? I'm starting charting this month, so I'm thinking the temp drop will give me the warning I need, but I'd like to test too.

Also, one article I read suggested that opk's (which I'm starting this month as well), can act as hpt's, and are even more sensitive. (Something about the proteins being similar enough that opk's can't tell the difference, so they detect pregnancy too, but it doesn't work the other way around with hpt's because they're more specific.) Does anyone have any thoughts on using them in that capacity?
