Usually, we all pitch in and do the big pots and pans. Then I run the dishwasher with 2 loads.

I wait until everyone leaves. People come to see me, not look at my clean kitchen. Plus, like KentuckyGirl, lots of guests try to help and I like giving them the night off.

I usually wait, otherwise most of our guests would try to help and I don't want them to feel obligated.

We wait. It feels strange not being entirely present with guests while hosting.

I clear the table and try to leave my kitchen somewhat orderly. Sometimes that means rinsing the dishes and putting them in the dishwasher and other times that means just scraping off the plates and stacking them in a pile. Pots and pans are usually tackeld the next morning. A friend of mine used to start cleaning up - kitchen and vacuuming- as a cue for guests to leave.

Usually everyone pitches in to help after dinner cause we really just have our family over. Sometimes though my DH will just stay in kitchen and clean up while the rest of us chat but we can see him from living room. Typically at our family dinner gatherings the dishes get done right away.

Just depends on the night. I don't usually fully clean up, but may get some of the dishes going. Or at least start soaking any that might need it.

...do you do the dishes while people are still there? Or do you wait until everyone has left and then tackle the huge stack of dishes?

Last night, we had some friends over for dinner and I did the dishes as each one was done. It actually worked out pretty nicely, since we have an open kitchen (so I didn't just disappear) and Bee was also there to chat with our friends. I'm usually not a huge fan of a host disappearing for an hour after dinner to clean up, but I see the appeal of already having all the dishes done by the time your friend's leave!

When you have people over for dinner, do you do the dishes while people are still there?
