Yes it absolutely does annoy me, I am English and we are obsessed with saying thank you and sorry!

This does annoy me. I often times will say "you're welcome" afterwards but I realize that's sort of passive aggressive

@megjay18: Yes! At my work we have 5 doors to go through in a short amount of time so it does get sort of awkward.

@megjay18: I've thought about this too! I just say it twice with a playful tone to acknowledge the weirdness. Better to be too polite and it be awkward than not.

i always say thank you and i get annoyed when people don't say it when i hold a door. i think it's just rude. if someone does something nice for you, just acknowledge it with a thank you - it's not difficult.

side question - at my work, the parking garage is connected to the main building via walkway. there are two doors to go through. so - do you say thank you both times? i always find it so awkward... especially if i hold open the first one, then i walk faster than that person. i usually wait for them at the second door to hold it open again because i'm an awkward person.

Oh I get sooo annoyed by this! Mainly because when I'm pushing a double stroller and often have a baby strapped to me, it is not easy for me to hold the door open. Just say thank you! And I will admit to making snarky "you're welcome" comments too

I'm not doing it for the appreciation, but it's just common courtesy to thank the person. If a bunch of people are going through the door and each person is holding it open for the person behind them, whatever. But if I'm going through the door, I look back and see someone a few steps behind me, and I WAIT with the door open, come on. They can acknowledge the kindness.

@mediagirl: Ha! I always want to do this but don't have the guts! I do say "you're welcome" under my breath, though.

I get annoyed, but I don't let it deter me from doing it again for the next person.

A friend of mine once got a snotty "you're welcome" from someone who held the door for her. She was so mad at him. She was on the phone talking and she felt having the door held open for her was his way of letting her not have to break conversation. I explained it's polite to give some sort of acknowledgement- head nod, smile, mouthed thank you. Something!

I always make sure to say thank you. I also make sure to respond with "you are welcome" when someone thanks me. One of my Euro co-workers once told me that Americans are incredibly rude by responding "uh huh" when someone says Thank You. It really struck me, so now I'm very aware and make sure to say you are welcome (and thank you too). (Not really what you asked but felt the need to share).

Yes I am annoyed, especially when they didn't even look at you or smile or nod, as if you are supposed to hold the door for your highness. But usually I get over it quickly..... I remind myself that maybe they are having a bad day.

There are times I forgot to say thank you too, but that is because I was distracted and my mind is somewhere. Usually I feel very bad afterwards.

I don't care. I'm not being polite to get a thank you, it's more just instinct at this point. Although I do say thank you if someone else holds the door for me! And I also think most people do the same. At least, I can't recall anyone NOT saying it, but I may not even notice.

I don't expect a thank you - I just hold the door because I know I like for someone to hold the door for me when my hands are full. I think I say thank you but it's possible my mind is elsewhere sometimes.

It doesn't bother me. Where we live, everyone holds the door all the time and I don't usually notice or care if someone says thank you or not. I always try to say thank you, unless it's multiple doors in a short period of time and then I think one thank you covers it.

I used to be annoyed. But then one time someone held it for me and I said thanks but they didn't hear me. They then told me off and said "it's customary to say thank you when someone holds the door" in a really shitty tone. And I was so shocked I just said "but I did!" And that's when I realized that maybe I didn't hear it or maybe even they are having a bad day or ultra shy. So I don't let it bother me. I did it to be nice, so I did my part.
ETA: what DOES make me mad though is when I'm pushing a stroller through a door and men don't hold it for me. I've had them look me in the eye and let it go. Then I do usually say "gee thanks".

Ok so I am on the other end of this ALL THE TIME. I ALWAYS say thank you when someone holds the door, and for some reason they n ever hear me, and then 99% of the time they make a snarky comment. I guess I speak too quietly?

ETA and it also annoys me that people get angry if they think they don't hear a thank you. I never really care if I am thanked for holding doors!
