@Mrs Green Grass: are you saying that baby cereals have added iron or regular cereals as well? If it's just to baby cereals, then it might be worth it for me to use those because I don't give him a multi-vitamin.

Thanks everybody for your input! It sounds like maybe this isn't even something I have to think about for a couple of more months. Thanks again!

I planned to skip grains, but bought an oatmeal cereal anyway. Lo had a hard time starting solids, so after trying tons of things, I took out the oatmeal again and mixed with BM, he loved it (in comparison to spitting everything else out at least).

The main reason to use cereals is that they have added iron which is critical for babies. I use a multi-vitamin for him anyway, so I didn't need the additives.

Total waste. I ground up oatmeal and stirred it into fruit purees. But I abandoned that pretty quickly in favor of fruit and veggie chunky purees.

I occasionally ground rice and oats, cooked them, and added them to some homemade purees, but not until DD was a little older- maybe 9-10 months. Quinoa was something she didn't handle well until even older. I don't really think a lot of grains are necessary for babies, and we also did BLW in conjunction with some purees, so she ate toast and things and had plenty of grains.

I didn't buy the baby stuff. I eat oatmeal all the time so I just ran it through the blender until it was a powder and then made it for LO. Or I'd make the oatmeal, add some fruit, and then throw the whole batch in the blender.

Thanks for the info ladies. It sounds like I could go either way.

@Mrs. Pen: I didn't know quinoa was a seed, thanks for that info!

I used the rice cereal for the first week of introducing solids. At 7 months I started her on regular oatmeal. I grind it a bit but it still leaves larger pieces so it has a chunkier consistency. I usually mix it with fruit/veggies purees for added flavor.

I did...I used baby oatmeal, starting at 5 months, and I still use it at 9.5 months. I mixed it with breastmilk initially, and now I mix it with fruit purees.

We didn't give him grain until past 9 months because I researched it and found that babies don't possess the digestive enzyme for grains until they're older!

Quinoa also isn't a grain, it's a seed - but you can start that at 8 months. I ground quinoa in the blender until it was very fine, then I cooked it like porridge/oatmeal and mixed in pureed fruit.

We never really ground oatmeal though you definitely can prior to cooking it. It's small enough though that when we started him on it he could easily eat it.

We held off on any other grain until he was much older. He is 18 months now and we'll give him an open faced sandwich on sprouted wheat bread.

I made lo brown rice cereal. First I ground up the rice in the food processor, then I cooked it. And then I thinned it down with water I think.

We're getting ready to start solids with LO, and I'm kind of confused about baby/infant cereals, like this:

http://www.amazon.com/Sprout-Whole-Grain-Cereal-Oatmeal/dp/B00BN1U4SS/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1376259916&sr=8-3&keywords=whole+grain+baby+cereal

Is there something special about baby cereals versus just regular cereals like oatmeal, quinoa, etc?

If you fed regular grains instead of these ones specifically marketed for babies, how did you prepare them?
