We also started spending a bit more on a hotel, just to be sure that we are not going to end up in some gross dust and mold-covered room with Nina, who loves to put everything in her mouth. Our last vacation was in NYC and my husband actually had to work, we just tagged along. We used http://new-york.hotelscheap.org/ at the time and didn't have any problems, except for the really expensive rates in NYC as a whole.

My criteria for a hotel is at a minimum that it not have an old, gross comforter-they make me squirm. We tend to stay at HI Expresses, at the least. It usually runs 120 a night or so, depending on where you are.

I use Priceline and Hotwire in almost all cases. I use sites like better bidding to figure out what hotel I am going to get or I bid on a 4*. Usually we pay $40-85 for a well-rates 3 star or a mystery 4*. Sometimes a 2.5 star, if I know which one Im getting. i get really squeamish about cleanliness, etc.

For our honeymoon, I found an awesome deal via Travelocity on a 4* ocean view Hyatt that included a gourmet breakfast for $130. Total bargain for what we got...the guy who checked us in was amazed at the price.

The only time we ever spend more than that is if we spend 1-2 nights at the beach. There, even the holiday inn is $200. It is what it is.

I find that when I research in advance, 4/5 star hotels have promo deals that are cheaper than 2/3 star hotels (when you include the price of breakfast, internet, parking, shuttle service).

@yoursilverlining: Well, based on what you said above about liking good towels and quality bath products, I probably wouldn't recommend the value resorts - they're cheap and enough for me, but they're also pretty basic and I do sometimes run into issues with noise from the other rooms. I'd go at least moderate, but honestly they have some amazing deluxe hotels if you can afford it!

Who are you traveling with, and is their a certain kind of vibe/environment you prefer? I've stayed at a lot and my recommendation would vary based on the # and ages of people. But without knowing details, my favorite value resort is Pop Century, my favorite moderate is either Coronado Springs or Port Orleans - Riverside (the second definitely has a more Disney feel to it, but the first has a couple extra in-room perks because it's frequently used for conventions), and my favorite deluxe...oh man, that's where it gets hard!

For the money I'd pick Animal Kingdom Lodge - one of the cheapest deluxe resorts, but it has amazing views of the animals, the lobby is breathtaking, the bunk beds for kids are fun, and the food is totally delicious. But if you want to splurge a little, the Yacht & Beach club is a bit fancier, within walking distance of Epcot and pretty close to Hollywood Studios too, and they have the absolute best pool if you won't be visiting the water parks. The Polynesian Resort is a ton of fun, but I've never personally stayed there, I prefer the resorts where everything is in one building as opposed to broken up into a bunch of small ones the way the Polynesian is. But it has a volcano-themed pool, a beach where you can watch the fireworks and they even play the music that accompanies it, a luau dinner show, lei-making fun for kids, etc - and it's on the monorail line. And if you like a more formal setting the Grand Floridian would be the best - it's not really my style, but lots of people love it and they have cute tea parties and things like that (and amazing restaurants!) That one is also on the monorail line.

That was really long, sorry! I can pare it down for you if you have any more details or questions, haha.

It depends on why we are staying at the hotel.

We usually do a pit stop in Vancouver for 1 night before heading up to Whistler and we will stay in the same awful Travelodge each time because it is cheap and convenient.

When we are on vacation, we usually try to find hotels between $120-150. If it's an expensive city, we will spend up to $225 or so but we will try to get a deal through Priceline or hotwire.

Depends on the location and occasion. At Disney (our most frequent vacation spot) I only pay around $100 a night because the other expenses really add up, and I'm generally fine with one of their value resorts - they're clean, and I find them to be comfortable enough and fun for kids. But if we're going to a place I'm not as familiar with I'll spend more to stay at a chain I can trust, like a Marriot or something. Or if it's a special occasion, like an anniversary trip, I might splurge a little.

It depends on location. Smaller town I don't like to spend more than $150. But if you're jn a big city like NYC then I try to aim for $200-$250 (pre-tax). I really rely on trip advisor and hotels.com to make sure I'm getting value for my $$.

Love Starwood hotels but often stay in Thompson hotels because they are super nice for the price.

Depends! Usually around 100-150$/night. We stayed in a great one in Dallas that was 75$ on Groupon! I'm a combination cheapo/hotel snob, so I hunt around until I can find great deals on the decent places.

I will say that we are spending 285$/night at Disney for a family suite, and it's about killing me to pay that much. :silly:

I know this makes us sound high maintenance; but we don't do cheap hotels. I'm too nervous about clean sheets and bedbugs, and I love good towels and nicer quality bath products.

Anything under $199 is IMO very reasonable and then it goes up from there. We just booked a room at the Philly RC for $299/night, which seems fair to me, since Philly isn't a cheap city.

It depends on the purpose; whether we want to enjoy ourselves, or it's just a pitstop or just need a place to crash. I would say 3 star minimum though; b/c some 3 star hotels aren't even that nice! I def don't need luxury but I don't like staying in dingy unclean looking rooms! I'd be willing to spend up to $250 a night depending, but $150 is more my budget.

3 star is definitely our minimum, and that's only when on my way somewhere or when I have no choice. We don't really do road trips a lot though so that rarely comes up. When we do vacations we want to stay in a nice hotel, 4 stars or 4.5 if we can find it. We definitely consider a really nice hotel a necessity of the vacation and we don't go until it fits in our budget to get that. I really dislike cheaper hotels because I never feel like they are clean enough.

We both like staying in nice places but typically we try to cap it at $120 a night unless we are picking that hotel for a specific reason. I feel like recently the wedding hotels have been closer to $150 a night. We spend more when we go to Chicago or New York (well, obviously) but we also can stay at a place on Central Park South for about $200/ night so cheaping out and staying outside the city isn't worth it when we have that option. I don't think we have ever spent more than $250/night though.

I love nice hotels but I also like spending the least amount of money I can, so it really depends on the situation. Long road trip that required a 1 night hotel stay (and it's not our destination)?

Motel 6 is fine with us for that.

Vacation where the hotel is part of the whole vaca? I'd prefer a nicer hotel. EXCEPT...if LO is with us, I guess now the residence type hotels with seperate bedroom/living room are the best for LOs sleep, and those are usually 2 stars.
