@bpcmarj: we are in MA too and this drives me crazy! I grew up in NH and love that I can use the thing to keep the gas on when I fill up there. Lol.

I usually wipe down the front and back windshield when I am pumping or just stay outside near the pump. If it's really cold outside I get back in my car.

Like @photojane: Mythbusters has stuck with me! Cell phone stays inside the car too.

I have also had the little clippy thingy fail in my old car, so I stay close by since I don't trust it. I think MA has the right idea in not allowing them and keeping people out of their cars.

Usually I just make faces at my boy like @MrsF: :P

If you read the warning message on the pump machine, it says you are not supposed to go back into the car.... According to my electrical engineer husband, you have already grounded yourself when you get out. Your electric current (?) is the same as the outside environment. When you get back in the car or somewhere along the line, you are creating current that is different from the one where the pump is at. It can create sparks and since you are close by the gasoline it could cause an explosion...

I always stay at the pump, even though we do have those clips to allow the gas to pump on its own. I don't like the idea of leaving it, so I just stand there and get wet, freeze, sweat, no matter what the weather! My husband uses the clip because he doesn't like to hold the pump.

@blackbird: One time some of our employees were carpooling together and they stopped for gas. The driver didn't turn off his car while pumping gas and the rest of them got all freaked out. The driver came from India relatively recently where apparently no one ever turns off their car while pumping gas and he never noticed any of the warning signs at gas stations to turn your car off, lol.

My gas tank is on the driver's side, which makes it easier. In good weather I usually lean against the car next to the pump. In bad weather (i.e. windy, cold, rain, snow) I sit in the driver's seat with the door open/cracked open until it is done.

I stay by the pump. In our area all the trigger thingies have been removed (it's the law to stay with the pump) so if you want to get back in the car you'd have to wedge your gas cap into the handle.... Not safe lol.

As long as you discharge any static electricity on your fingers/hands (your gloves would have to be conductive and they probably aren't...) before touching the pump, I don't think there's an issue.

I don't usually sit back down in the car, but I'll put my card away and clean out my coffee cups and breakfast napkins (I take breakfast in the car every morning) while the gas is pumping. I always make sure to touch another part of the car to discharge static before I go back to the nozzle though.

Woah, I get back in the car 100% of the time. I put away my cards (discount card and then the credit card). I fill out a journal every time I get gas (mileage on the car, gas price, how many gallons, how many miles I drove, mpg, where I got gas) and that takes up the time that the gas is pumping.

I would get bored standing at the pump that whole time
