According to my electrical engineer husband, you have already grounded yourself when you get out. Your electric current (?) is the same as the outside environment. When you get back in the car or somewhere along the line, you are creating current that is different from the one where the pump is at. It can create sparks and since you are close by the gasoline it could cause an explosion... The driver didn't turn off his car while pumping gas and the rest of them got all freaked out. In good weather I usually lean against the car next to the pump. In bad weather (i.e. windy, cold, rain, snow) I sit in the driver's seat with the door open/cracked open until it is done. I fill out a journal every time I get gas (mileage on the car, gas price, how many gallons, how many miles I drove, mpg, where I got gas) and that takes up the time that the gas is pumping.
