I can't really go back and read all the comments right now, but just wanted to give some hope. I was induced on my due date with my second b/c my first was 10 days late and I had bad tearing.... He was close to 9lbs. I don't know my official bishop's score, but it was highly unfavorable. She was at negative 3 like 12 hours after I got the misoprostol. I was only dilated 1cm when I started the process. Anyway, for the most part I had a totally uncomplicated vaginal delivery. From the first misoprostol to baby it was 18 hours. Got the first pill at 11pm and baby at 4pm. I got an epidural around noon and that is also when my water broke.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: Sending lots of  and :goodluck: to you!

She can be a polarizing figure, but the Skeptical OB posted an "Ode to C-Section Mothers" a while back that has always stuck with me, about how selfless it is to have a c-section: http://www.skepticalob.com/2013/01/an-ode-to-c-section-mothers.html

There is so, so much more to being a parent than the way the baby comes into the world. Thinking of you...

I'm sorry you feel pressured into making this decision :bummed: . I know it's really tough when you lose faith in the decisions your doctor is making. But I know for me, personally, taking home a healthy baby was so much more important than the birth experience. I had a c-section and it really wasn't as bad as it's made out to be. I even plan to do it again in 4 months.

My recovery the first time with a semi-emergency c-section was pretty smooth. I've definitely heard much worse recovery stories here. I was a little stiff for a few days, but by the time I got home I barely needed the meds. Make sure to take the meds offered on a super regular schedule the first few days. By my 2 week appointment I was off the percoset and only need an occasional advil, and I was cleared to drive.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: This is such a crazy story, and I'm so sorry the last few days of your pregnancy are so upsetting and stressful.

FWIW, in my two mom birth groups, there have been several girls who had bigger than 9 lb babies successfully. There were also several girls who had C sections due to large babies, and the babies were smaller than estimated. And then one woman had a C-section, and her baby was much larger than estimated (11 lbs). She also had GD issues, I believe.

I hope that whatever happens, you are feeling at peace about it.

Also, every hospital has an OB on call there at the hospital. Because my labor was so quick, my OB wasn't there to deliver and the on-call OB did it and I actually really liked him--he did a great job. Just in case you magically go into labor today--just go into the hospital. Good luck--thinking about you today.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: crazy! Do you have all your health records from pregnancy just in case this dr doesn't work out? If there's a teaching hospital, or somewhere used to handling higher risk cases, around you covered by your insurance I might take my records over to there and ask them if you can drop them off in case you go into labor.

I'm sorry your having so many doubts about your care this late in the game.
Baby boy will be here soon and hopefully this drama will be a distant memory once he's in your arms.

FWIW I'm convinced my section recoveries are easier than an LGA vaginal recovery would be.

@Maysprout: not sure, we called the hospital in the MOTN to see if I was still on the schedule. It was cancelled. I spoke with the office manager this morning and now waiting for thethe doctor to call me back. I doubt it would be the same time slot if it is today since that's less than 3 hours away. DH is cleaning up the house while I am continuing to work from home.

I don't know if that's possible since you have not gotten 100% support from your OB practice. :bummed: But, I just wanted to say that you can feel totally empowered during a C-section for sure, just like any method of birth. You shouldn't feel like you didn't do enough or ask enough questions. There just are no black and white rules in birthing; we all just do the best we can. Good luck.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I'm so sorry you've been forced to make this decision. I imagine being overdue is plenty stressful without having to deal with this, too. It sounds like you've given it a lot of thought and your healthy boy will be here soon. I hope the c-section goes well and recovery goes well too. My c-section recovery was very easy. Absolutely no issues whatsoever!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I was really busy yesterday and didn't get a chance to comment, but I'm so glad to see you've made this choice. I can't agree more with @LBee: when she says that many on HB go past the point of informed patient to wanting to dictate care and thinking they are more knowledgeable than medical professionals. It sounds like your doctors are trying to take a conservative approach, aiming for the best outcome for you and baby. I hope everything goes smoothly for you! And if the baby turns out not to be large, etc, I hope you won't feel like you made a "wrong" decision. You made the best choice to take care of yourself and your baby with the information that was available to you. Good luck! And enjoy meeting that sweet baby of yours!

@pwnstar: @LBee: Thank you for your dissent on this thread. I really took what you said to heart about making the decision in a vacuum. You and a few other posters really challenged me to consider what perhaps my doctors have left unsaid all this time regarding my care & risks. When I started filling out the intake paperwork for the midwives late last night I had to pour over my records. Anytime there was a concern my doctors were active in managing the concern.

Even though I have had a pretty smooth, comfortable pregnancy I started off overweight and gained- not more than what was recommended, but still gained 25 lbs. Yesterday, the nurse couldn't get the blood pressure machine to work and had to take it manually. After she finished she said she calibrated it too high. Once again, they have thought I would be another patient with high blood pressure by just looking at me, which hasn't been the case at all.

I don't like their bedside manner- I never did. The anecdotal and scientific evidence for and against cesarean is compelling. However, if my doctor's are correct and baby is big or even bigger because the numbers could be off in either direction I don't want to risk not bringing home a healthy baby either. If they are wrong, then clearly I can't undue major abdominal surgery, but at least I will have peace knowing I put the best interest of my child ahead of my desires.

First of all, I'm sorry that you're feeling bullied by your practice. That's uncool. BUT I have to believe you stuck with your doctor for this long for a reason and you should trust them. If they don't feel comfortable attempting a vaginal birth, I wouldn't feel comfortable attempting one either!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I didn't read all the comments, so sorry if I missed part of the story, but here's my info on a big baby:

My first born was 8 lbs 14 oz at birth and I had an episiotomy without drugs. They numb the area first, but at that point, you're already in agony pushing out a giant baby, so I don't actually remember the pain of the episiotomy at all!

Also, I have very wide hips and Xander came early, so everything worked out for my big baby. But if he had been overdue, I would've opted for a c-section. The risks and potential outcomes of shoulder dystopia was just too scary to me.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: that's so crazy, I'm so sorry you're dealing with this at 40+ weeks pregnant. That's the last time a woman needs to feel stressed out or like her provider is not on her side!

Hopefully, the baby decides to come tonight or soon and labor is fast and easy and this whole thing is soon a distant memory.

@coopsmama: those are my options at this point.

@sotofamilia: The doctor said if I didn't do the cesarean tomorrow I would need to find another hospital. Her practice only has privileges at one hospital and no one at her practice on call would give me anything but a cesarean even if I come in with active labor- she actually said 7cm. Now, of course there are other doctors at the hospital, but to me it sounded like a threat- no one is going to go against her at the hospital. In fact, the nurses even asked the other partner doctor, Dr. G to speak to us because after Dr. U spoke to us she left for the hospital. Dr. G wouldn't come out of her office.

@yoursilverlining: the midwife team is opening up a birth center, but it's not open yet and that is why it has to be a home birth. The reason they are taking me on at this point is because of the relationship with my doula, I found her through them, and partially me because of I am using them for the placenta encapsulation. Another midwife group that employs a doctor on staff and has hospital priveleges already told me no.

The reason why I want a care provider now and not just at the hospital if I go into spontaneous labor is for the monitoring. I don't know if I'm legit high risk, my doctor's never used that to describe me, but they said I should be monitored every 2-3 days until baby arrives since I'm now past EDD. ETA: it isn't too late for me to decide not to go the midwife/ home birth route. I just have to decide what's more important to me- monitoring or hospital birth.

Please trust me when I tell you this 9 lb baby thing did not come up. For the last couple of months I was concerned about automatically being induced for not giving birth by 39 weeks, which came up with Dr. B during my birth preferences review. To my surprise Dr. B saw me at my 39week appointment and didn't even do a cervical check.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: what happens if you skip the C-section tomorrow? I thought after a certain point, OBs weren't allowed to drop your care.

Also, this situation makes me so frustrated for you. I had a similar situation with my first (estimated >90% percentile at 38 weeks, doc wanted to induce, I ended up delivering 40+4 vaginally. It was an incredibly stressful two weeks.)

I know there are risks involved with delivering a large baby, but to not even let you try is so crazy to me. I think it's pretty rare that a woman's body will grow a baby it can't birth.

Anyway, you seem to be a good advocate for yourself. Best of luck with anything, you definitely have a lot of support here!

I'm so sorry you're going through this - nothing that's been said here would seem to indicate that you need a c-section at this point. Of course, in many cases c-sections are necessary, but the U.S. has a much higher rate than other industrialized countries and there's a lot of evidence that financial incentives of doctors play an important role in explaining this. There's a great and well-published paper on this here: http://econ.sites.olt.ubc.ca/files/2015/01/pdf_paper_marit-rehavi-physicians.pdf

In short, for non-physician patients, whether or not they get a c-section is strongly influenced by the doctors' financial incentives to perform one. This effect is not there for otherwise medically-identical physician patients, who have better knowledge of whether a c-section is medically necessary so are harder to bully into (our out of) one. The medical outcomes are worse for the non-physician patients, in both directions. When they need a c-section but don't get one due to financial incentives, there's worse outcomes for their babies, but same when they don't need a c-section and get one due, as c-sections aren't without risk for the babies and should only be used when medically necessary.

Anyways, I'm really sorry this is happening - I would be completely livid.

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: I would be so extremely frustrated in your situation. I hope the midwife works out for you. Just keep in mind that you can transfer to the hospital AT ANY TIME. At least if you see the midwife you can get the monitoring you need and then make the decision as labor progresses. And I'm sure if labor does not start on its own you can schedule a c-section in a couple days or a week.
I hope you get a good resolution and the best birth possible!

ETA: one of my friends planned a home birth with a midwife and ended up in the hospital. And I personally delivered my second at a different hospital than I was supposed to because we couldn't make it to the other one on time - which meant a random OB caught the baby. A hospital will not turn away a woman in labor!

@Mrs. Lemon-Lime: why does a midwife team mean a home birth? No one can force you into a medical procedure without your consent. If you go to a hospital in labor, an OB will assist you (or midwives would). Given how absolutely detail driven you are (from your other posts), it seems just so odd that this is suddenly coming up now, so strongly. It seems like something that would have come up weeks before now - I know my OB and I started serious talks weeks before 40 weeks, and I think we're pretty norm.

I can't imagine your choices are a forced c-section or home birth. Women deliver all the time without having an OB (or prenatal care or anything). There are OBs at hospitals and once you are admitted, you will be assisted.

@Madison43: I have an appointment with a midwife tomorrow. On my Monday visit, Dr. U said once a patient agrees to a cesarean that's what she's giving them. She said her practice will not vaginally deliver baby's estimated at 9 lbs. Period. Besides a big baby being uncomfortable Dr. U did not give me risks to support her recommendation, which turned out to be a requirement.
