The maintenance light comes on for oil changes. I did have the check engine light come on because there was a recall on a monitor part that monitored the oxygen...I had to take it in and have it fixed.

I think my car has individual lights for everything and then my computer system will tell me other things (tire pressure, oil, ect.) The last time a light came on it was serious, thank goodness it was under warrenty or we would have been out 4K!

Mine hasn't come on yet, but if one of my tires gets even a pound low (like if it's cooler outside), the tire pressure light comes on and drives me nuts. In my Jeep, the light would come on if it was a more serious engine problem, and in the Crown Vic before that it only came on when my battery was messing up.

Mine has been turning off/on on it's own for 3 years. I took it in once and they told me it was my gas cap and gave me a new gas cap. Sometime about gas tank pressure.

It still goes off/on more than I like it to but it's usually because I didn't tighten the gas cap as much as I should the last time I filled it up.

The internets tell me it's a pretty common issue. I *might* have to get my gas tank replace sometime in the future. Nothing dangerious though. :)

BTW if you need a smog check... having the light on is an automatic fail. Since mine turns off/on on it's own as long as I go in when it's on an off state I pass the smog check.

Probably too much info... but I hope it's helpful. :)

It will come on for serious problems, but you'll probably also notice something else bad. Like the oil light or weird clunking or some other symptom.

I've been ignoring mine for way too long. I know what it is, it's a sensor for the catalytic converter and we live outside of DEQ so it's not a huge problem. I've always believed that it isn't the most serious light to come on, the oil and temp lights are way more important.

Yeah, in our truck the maintenance light is a oil change only light (not sure why they don't just call it that) as far as I'm aware (according to everything I've read about it).

I take mine to get an oil change when it pops up too. Never thought about other incidents! I know if my tire pressures are off, there's a signal for that.

I've always thought it would turn on after a certain number of miles on the car. Each time, I would eventually go get an oil change and the mechanic would simply turn off the "maintenance required" light. I wonder if it ever means anything more serious, such as something coming loose, or something about to break? Does it even catch that?
