With only 3 days a year sick leave at my second job, I have no choice but to come to work sick. I just constantly sanitize and wear a mask. I also never touch a patient without gloves. But in your situation it is different. I would just keep sanitizing and hope you don't get it!

Ugh this is a hugely rude, inconsiderate thing to do! I never come in sick unless I know it's not contagious (like allergies but even then I slather on the hand sanitizer and am very good about wiping down my cube because I sneeze).

But, we did have a VP say that people shouldn't get sick during tax season. I had a nasty stomach bug and stayed home for 2 days and she made the comment the first day I was back. So when you work in an environment like that, I could see how some people would come in sick.

I hate it when people come into work sick! I think it's really inconsiderate, considering we are all breathing the same air and sharing the same copier, fax machine, etc.

I used to work with a co-worker who would come into work sick all the time, cough and spit into her trash can. She acted like this was the most normal thing ever, while I watched her in horror. I used to spray down her desk and keyboard with Lysol while she was at lunch.

@Mrs. Lovejoy: I agree, I think it has a lot to do with people thinking they'll look bad if they stay home sick. I absolutely hate that mentality though. I work for a state university and they had to send out an email telling people to use their sick and vacation time because there was too much time banked across the University.

Wow. I don't work but DH has crohns and takes meds for that which makes his immune system not so great so he has to be very careful. If someone did that at his work, I think he'd take a PTO. Not worth getting sick!

Sometimes I want to punch people in the face that do this (just being honest :). We have PTO for a reason AND people can work from home if they are up to it.

I think a lot of it has to do with our culture and people thinking it makes them look good for coming in to work regardless of their condition. Our company made public commentary about keeping germs at bay and washing hands well, but never said that you should stay home or work from home if you're very ill. I was really frustrated and thought it sent the wrong message. I work in a corporate environment where virtually everything could wait just another day.

@MungBean: We often have to come in to work sick. I mean we're always sick in my line of work! But we are mandated to wear a mask all day if we do come in sick. I also make it a big point to purell and wipe down everything a sick co-worker or a sick me has touched. None of us get offended because we all know the drill!

He finally took all of our passive aggressive hints and went home. I'm really surprised this guy would come in so sick. He wears gloves to handle papers that have been handled by our patients and is constantly clorox wiping things.

I would DEFINITELY say something to him! Even if it's a half joke that gets the point across like "Wow, thanks for coming to work with the flu! It definitely makes the day more interesting when I spend it 100% focused on how NOT to catch your germs and bring them home to my baby!"

I would talk to the boss or HR also. They should send him home. And if I was pregnant like the other girl, oh Hells NO he would not be staying at work around me!

I wouldn't say anything but I'd def stay away from him, wash my hands constantly, and take extra vit c. You might even consider wearing a face mask?

I really hate that. I could see that he wouldn't think about you bringing the germs home to your baby (out of sight out of mind) but the 8 month pregnant woman isn't a reminder that getting sick is a much bigger deal to some people and you should be a little more considerate?
I'm really non confrontational so I probably wouldn't say anything and I'd be mad all day. Just wash your hands and sanitize a lot, use paper towels to open doors, and hope for the best I guess. And if he came back in tomorrow obviously sick, I might say something.

@Mrsbells: I'm not sure if it's really the flu, but my thought process is *HE* thinks it's the flu. So he thinks he's spreading around flu-ey germs and is apparently ok with that.

If it's something like the sniffles I usually don't mind (since it does suck to have to play catch-up when you miss work), but the flu is a whole different story. Why did he feel compelled to come in? The flu is extra nasty this year and there is no office work that can be that important that he puts others at risk for getting sick, especially a pregnant woman.

My boss is like that. He will send everyone else home for being sick, but if he's sick, he'll come to work. GO HOME. Especially if you don't have strict sick leave. Like, take a couple days off and rest!

... with the flu!

A co-worker came in to work today and told everyone to stay away from him because he has the flu. His cubicle is right in the middle of the office and I need to walk past it to get anywhere, plus he's touching all the door handles and using the kitchen area. This part of our office is small and there's only seven people in it, but one of them is 8 months pregnant and I have a baby at home who couldn't get a flu shot. We get very generous amounts of sick time and I think he should have stayed home!

If your co-worker came to work obviously sick and contagious, would you say something? I'm too chicken to say anything, but I loudly announced I was going to walgreens to buy some hand sanitizer.
